Saintly reptile: Crocodile turns vegetarian

NDTV CorrespondentSaturday, August 26, 2006 (Kasargod):We've all heard of celebrities who turn vegetarian as part of a fad, but here's someone who's become a celebrity purely on the virtue of being vegetarian! A crocodile in a temple pond in Kasargod in Kerala has now shot to fame locally after news got out that this reptile has no meaty cravings. He instead makes do with generous helpings of local boiled red rice. The crocodile, which is approximately two meters in length, lies peacefully in a dark cave, waiting for its daily rendezvous with the temple priests who feed the hungry reptile. Although crocodiles can adapt themselves to different situations, a purely vegetarian crocodile is unheard of.Folklore has it that the crocodile found its way to the temple pond in 1940s and has been here since, rarely coming out and never causing any mischief.

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.

~ Leonardo da Vinci (Renaissance painter, architect, engineer, mathematician and philosopher, 1452 - 1519)

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a rat", but the thing that gives me humanity and

keeps me from being "just a man or woman." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a rat", just smile -- because they "just don't understand."

That is just wierd, I mean how did he get into a temple pond in the first place. I`m sure that he`s eating birds and vermin as well, after all they are ambush predators. "That is just wierd, I mean how did he get into a temple pond in the first place"

My reply: Crocodiles can actually run pretty quick for short distances (for the first 30 feet)seeds generally up 10-20 mph and longer distances they can just walk slower and travel with no problem from what i have been researching.

"I`m sure that he`s eating birds and vermin as well, after all they are ambush predators"

Reply: i dont consider myself to be an expert on crocodiles and i would have personally have had an expierence with this partricualr crocodile to tell you what it eats or if its peaceful but i can tell you that it is not very scientific for humans such as yourself or as a whole to generalize an animal or species behavior as each animal has its own individual thoughts and our capable of making there own choices of what they wish there behavior or diet to be so classifying a species as ambush predator again is a mass generalization and degrades this crocodiles individual identity of being able to make its own choice. All mammals, reptiles can feel pain, pleasure just like people and have there own uniqe perception which gives them there individuality. This is common mistake i myself made so dont feel bad. Imagine if you had one bad expierence with someone elses pet snake and genaralized every behavior of that snake to there whole species and started telling people all snakes are violent for example.

peace out
