So what does everyone think of the subject title? Thus is the argument of someone who insists she absolutely cannot be a vegetarian let alone vegan! She's a single mom and says meat is 99 cents and can last for days while vegetables go too fast and are too expensive. She has no time to cook anything (except meat). Did I mention that she's a SINGLE MOTHER with NO TIME? Did I also mention that vegetables don't last as long as meat? And meat is cheaper? Yeah so she's a single mother that can't afford vegetables because meat lasts longer... and meat feeds hundreds while veggies don't feed as many people. My goodness - this list of excuses could probably go on forever......at least this is what she repeats over and over and over again in our discussions of why I've chosen the route of veganism...

I suggest you visit the Vegan Society website and get the information

on how many people are fed per kilo of grain in comparison with how

many people are fed per kilo of meat and how much land (forest), grain

and water is used to feed food animals, andhow much pollution is

produced.

While you let her get away with being silly, she will continue to be

so. Set her straight on the facts and tell her that she must be brave

enough to say that she wants to eat meat and to stop making excuses to

justify it.

Hi shyswtie (what should we call you?)

Welcome....

Well, maybe things are different in the UK to wherever you are... but where I live vegetables are *far* cheaper than meat, and much quicker to prepare and cook. Unless they have different prices and cooking times for single mums!!???!!!

I would think that growing your own veggies would be cheaper, help her

family values, teach her kids not only gardening and sustaining your

own food but great " savings " techniques.

And exactly how does meat last longer?

She could make a veggie soup with lentils and it would last longer and

be healthier.

Sounds like an excuse to me. She also sounds a tad bit defensive about

her choices.

Very true Peter - beans and tofu are very cheap and easily

substituted for meat.

I don't want to get preachy with that single mom,

but in the long run,

eating meat is much more expensive, no matter if it cost

99 cents for a cheesburger at mcdonalds.

the thing is, that even insurance isn't good enough to pay the medical

bills once you get an illness due to unhealthy foods.

its like this, maybe she is getting cheap meat,

but she is also getting, hormones, antibiotics, saturated fat

and increasing her chances of cancer.

her savings are temporary, bad foods costs your health.

one idea is that maybe she can watch fast food nation. (this movie

talks aboutwhats (behind the politics) of the meat industry.

not sure if she might be open to watch that movie or not.

what meat is 99c? road kill? vegetables go too fast? what jet proppelled ones? Has she seen the price on dried pulses and legumes? ( admittedly you may have to soak overnight and cook for an hour, but you could probably feed a family all week for 99c of dried pulses, not meat) Is she saying she never eats veg? if she is that skint that she eats road kill, she can always hang around fruit and veg stalls at markets, they usually dump loads of bruised less than perfect fruit and veg, and will usually let you have stuff for free or reduced if you have the nerve to ask! salads take no time to cook at all! sadly....dead animal flesh is highly subsidized here, as are any of the processed foods...

a quick look at the local safeway shows dead chickens cost .69 cents/lb

simple..money and lobbying...

wot else greases the wheels of american society?

dead flesh is big business, and our entire agricultural system is dominated by a few big giants

as for consumption...while its not quite as crazy as it was during the atkins fad, i don't see any movement really to consume less...

its easier to find vegan stuff nowadays, but i don't see a lot of that equating with less dead flesh feasting..

its just big business here, and its worth a ton of $$$..

water for meat production, as well as grain, is very heavily subsidized...

and face it, you can't go ten minutes without seeing an ad for some fast food hellhole pumping out glossy images of charcoaled muscle and fat....

when we were in denver last fall, every restaurant just about had a sign on the menu toting their "diet/healthy selection".....

it was always for atkins

heck..i haven't even seen atkins stuff over here in awhile...

then again, i never go into the big supermarkets, so maybe i'm missing out...

I think it's just an excuse. Incidentally though, I don't see any ethical problem with eating roadkill.

Same here Peter. There is an organic veggie box scheme but it is about twice as expensive as the organic veggies in Tesco, and that is a lot more expensive than the non-organic veggies in Tesco. We could not survive on our local shop - one in one village and one in the other (we are between villages). All they sell is cheap tinned stuff. The veggies that they have are wilting, and there is not much selection even if you don't mind wilted veggies.

what meat is 99c? road kill? vegetables go too fast? what jet proppelled ones? Has she seen the price on dried pulses and legumes? ( admittedly you may have to soak overnight and cook for an hour, but you could probably feed a family all week for 99c of dried pulses, not meat) Is she saying she never eats veg? if she is that skint that she eats road kill, she can always hang around fruit and veg stalls at markets, they usually dump loads of bruised less than perfect fruit and veg, and will usually let you have stuff for free or reduced if you have the nerve to ask! salads take no time to cook at all!

sorry to hear that

lucky fer us, my veggie needs come from:

a. farmers market

b. my garden

c. then either Whole foods, rainbow, or berkeley bowl...and all of the above stores tell you which veggies are organic, and where they come from, so makes buying locally a tad easier...

getting sorta crazy tho, when we hit the farmers market three times a week

hi jo,

in the 1970's some uruguyans and argentinians, soccer team plane had

crashed into the andes and some of them had to eat each other.

If I were in that situation, i probably wouln't but then again

I can't say because I have never been in that situation.

part of me, will do anything to survive for the love of life.

and part of me, says that death is ok, and when it's time to go

it's not that bad.

death can be the begining of something new, peacefully so

it's ok for me to let go of life.

I do not make a judgement, on those who eat other humans.

Ideally I would like to die in the woods, so that other animals

could have a good meal that day. If can nourish someone's baby, with

the meat on my bones,

then my life has done good.

Yeah so she's a single mother that can't afford vegetables becausemeat lasts longer... and meat feeds hundreds while veggies don't feedas many people. hi jo, in the 1970's some uruguyans and argentinians, soccer team plane hadcrashed into the andes and some of them had to eat each other. If I were in that situation, i probably wouln't but then againI can't say because I have never been in that situation.part of me, will do anything to survive for the love of life.and part of me, says that death is ok, and when it's time to goit's not that bad. death can be the begining of something new, peacefully so it's ok for me to let go of life.I do not make a judgement, on those who eat other humans. Ideally I would like to die in the woods, so that other animalscould have a good meal that day. If can nourish someone's baby, withthe meat on my bones, then my life has done good. , "jo" wrote:>> Only if I was starving and there were not enough veggies to surviveon - but then I would probably eat animals if that was the case,........... or even humans !> > Jo> - > peter VV > > Thursday, September 21, 2006 6:42 PM> Re: Eating meat lasts longer and is cheaperthan vegetables.> > > But would you do it?> > THe Valley Vegan................> > jo wrote:> I think it's just an excuse. Has she seen the price on dried pulses and legumes? (admittedly you may have to soak overnight and cook for an hour, butyou could probably feed a family all week for 99c of dried pulses, notmeat) Is she saying she never eats veg? if she is that skint that sheeats road kill, she can always hang around fruit and veg stalls atmarkets, they usually dump loads of bruised less than perfect fruitand veg, and will usually let you have stuff for free or reduced ifyou have the nerve to ask! salads take no time to cook at all!> > The Valley Vegan................> > shyswtie28 wrote:> So what does everyone think of the subject title?
