ok..so its a meaningless date

but...the year is drawing to a close

the curtain is dropping down on 2006 CE

so

best thing you read in 2006?

best band?

best new music?

best restaurant?

fave new meal?

new fact/idea/ that you learned this year?

etc and so forth

I'm getting Pissed for X-mas

Just like the rest of the Year

There's no future in this lonely world

So might as well have a beer

Is it really possible to narrow it down to one best band, or one best book?

I don't think I could do that. And sadly enough, I don't think I could come

up with a best restaurant ... must be cause I don't eat out nearly often

enough!

New Year's eve is not a meaningless date, however. It's my birthday!

peace,

sharon

Hi Fraggle

> best thing you read in 2006?

You've made me realise just how little I've read this year! In fact, I've

only read academic type books. I guess my favourite would be David Haycock's

biography of William Stukeley.

> best band?

Stratovarius (particlarly as it looked like they were dead at the end of

last year!)

> best new music?

Orphaned Land - fantastic mix of progressive metal and Jewish folk music....

> best restaurant?

Cafe Kino - new vegan / fairtrade / co-op / ethical cafe in Bristol

Hi Fraggle

It's difficult to remember where 2005 and 2006 meet but I've been reading

Maeve Binchy and Lovecraft - both good. The best band we saw, forme was

Stratovarius and Hammerfall :-) - best new music is difficult but I think is

a toss up between Orphaned Land and Coheed & Cambria. Berst restaurant as

always - the Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston Upon Thames, where my latest

discovery (fave meal maybe) was cous cous with chick pea curry. I can't

comment on the last one as there are always so many new things to learn and

ideas around.

What were your answers Fraggle?

just starting banewreaker and godslayer, both by Jacqueline Carey...sorta a

cookbook we used the most this year

pretty sure i read Long Emergency last year..soo, never mind

oh, and

i got into the Malazan, book of the Fallen series by Erickson this year...

was weird tho, sicne i read them all out of order

and, one book would be great in the series, and then the next would be crap...

hard to fathom

and, i really gotta stop getting into long drawn out book series, like Robert

Jordan's Wheel of Time, or George Martin's Fire and ice series (and now

Erickson's Malazan book of the Fallen), as it takes toooooooooo dang long fer

the author to write the next one....

Yeah, and then you've gotta go back and read all the others before you read

the new one. Well, that's me anyway. I have such a terrible memory. I

never did get around to finishing King's Dark Tower series for that reason.

My daughter is into dragon books these days. Keeping in mind that she's 13,

any good recommendations? I know Anne McCaffrey wrote lots, but if you are

going to read them, where would you start, and would they be good for a 13

year old?

I've just started reading some Anne McCaffrrey, and so far I'm not

impressed - I'm on page 105, and the plot so far could have been put on a

Shame about the lack of good reading - next year might be better. Your

mention of a cookbook made me remember Sinfully Vegan - which I saw at

Peter's place - I am now the proud owner of my own copy and it is very good.

I got it just before Yule and have only made some brownies from it so far -

but they were good.

I read loads of fantasy books years ago, but seriously cant remember any of them. I realy do have a memory problem, sorry. How about some Pratchett,at least one of the discworld has a dragon breeder in it?.and maybe his childrens books do too? I think I read ( may even still have ) some Mcafferty but it didnt do anything for me, and some Gemmel & Eddings which were better. Oh I just finished Pratchetts latest book Wintersmith too , and it was good. It is good - threw me a bit with the American cup measures and applesauce in

almost every recipe - but I got a conversion chart off the internet, and use

mashed banana instead of apple sauce. I reckon they will all work well. I

must do Colin a cheesecake, as he used to love them.

Hi Sharon

Amazingly it did - at around page 150, we suddenly were introduced to the

concept of a plot, and the last 100 pages were really quite good :-)
