Forgive novice ...

Forgive the novice in me but this whole lifestyle is brand new and I'm

looking for sound direction from those who have been doing this

awhile. Can anyone suggest books or websites that you highly recommend

that gives an over-all view of veganism. I've stopped consuming all

animal products but as I read some of the posts I wonder about

household items, clothing, and other products that I'm oblivious to.

Thanks for your help!

Well, PETA pops to my mind first of all. They have a lot of offbranches,

like caringconsumer.com, where you can find out about companies that do and

don't test on animals. And you can order lots of resources. They have a

little pocket booklet that you can order, something like fifty of them for

$5 or so (long time since I ordered it), so you can carry it with you when

you shop and whip it out to see if the product you are considering was

tested on animals. They also have a book, which is revised each year, that

goes into these things in more depths. You can also purchase other books

and videos there. I got " Earthlings " which is narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.

If you ever feel a temptation to eat meat, I guarantee the look in a cow's

terrified eyes will come to remind you why you shouldn't.

another great one is VegSource: www.vegsource.com/ where you'll find a recipe exchange, boards on various topics (health issues, raw diets, veg singles, veg kids, new veggies, etc.), dvd's, books, other products, and a slew of websites: John Robbins, Dr. McDougall, free farm animals, christian veg, jewish veg, and lots more. Enjoy!!

Thanks, I'm sure I'll have plenty to ask as we go. I'm curious, what

got you started on this path and what's been the most challenging?

Anyone else is welcome to share too!

What started me off was probably the compasion for animals angle rather than the healthy vibe. The most challenging thing, is probably eating out still with family or friends, being singled out. i got lost and refuse to ask directions

no...

umm

you know..i couldn't put one event down

it was a just a " gee, why do we do this? "

back in the mid to late 80's i started thinking that it was wrong to eat other

beings

that it was destroying the planet

that it was cruel and disgusting

(i came from a VERY big meat background...we ate meat 7 meals a day...my father

was a big trapper, etc)

i stopped eating fast food about that time..the whole " destroying the rain

forest " , and fast food culture was starting to be sick in my wee lil mind

then..in 1989...just went, " heck with this, i'm going vegan "

had nooooooooooo idea wot i was doing

had no real information available

just kinda winged it

it was bumpy and a mess at times

but..eh..live and learn, no?

most challenging?

starting when i was one step above homeless and having zero information

i was goin on what i already new, and could figure out...

i lived in the " hood " basically, and dinner turned out to be wotever vegetables

i could dumpster dive and cheap pasta from the liquor store across the street...

not exactly the brightest thing, but eh, i now have lotsa stories

hahahahahahahaha

people out there with a heart and hearing how others came to this

choice really motivates me to stay the course.

YES! I'm singled out as well and that has been a little

uncomfortable but it's also been a time to plant ideas as I'm

usually asked WHY I've decided to live such a restricted life. LOL!

I don't feel restricted at all. There are plenty of choices and lots

of new kinds of foods to try. I also have a lot of Vegan resturants

within a short distance and it's going to be fun scoping them out

and learning about new dishes and such.

Are there enough Welsh people wanting to eat out? I don't think we'd be very welcome across the border.
