Loosing luggage definitely starts the trip out on a bad foot especially when what was in the luggage was necessary for Shirley Minter-Smith to enjoy the cruise. "I had whole wheat pasta.. I had soy milk," Minter-Smith explained. The food she backed in her suitcase never made it to her destination. "I've been a vegan for 14 years. And I've been on numerous cruises. I always take my food with me. It's never been a problem. But this time it was lost," she said. Lost in the luggage world during an American Airline flight from Raleigh to Los Angeles. "It was a nightmare. It was my anniversary, my 28th year of being married, and I got to baggage, waited and waited, no luggage... my clothing, no food or anything," Minter-Smith said. One bag with all her clothes did eventually show up, but no sign of the bag with all her vegan food or bottled water. "They said we'll deliver your food and your luggage to the ship or the next port of call. But it never

did come." Without her food, Shirley says she struggled on the cruise to find things that would meet her vegan needs. Once back on land, Shirley filed several lost luggage claims with American Airlines, but her claim was denied so she called the Troubleshooter Hotline. An American Airlines representative took another look at Shirley's claim and agreed to pay for her luggage and food containers. "I'm very happy. Without you I would never have gotten one penny," Minter-Smith told the Troubleshooter. An American Airlines representative said in a statement, "A review of the original decision to deny this claim by one of our claims specialists was found to be in error. The customer was eligible to receive payment for the non-perishable baggage items that were lost." Peter H

I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed. I feel, at this moment, more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless." Lincoln in a letter to Col. William F. Elkins on November 21, 1864
