I was walking to work this morning and had a scare. The campus has a

new set of sculptures - a pack of wolves! I thought they were real

for a second.

One of the houses in my neighborhood has some life-size bronze

sculptures of children in the front yard, and the first time we

walked by, Jemma did a double take. (Jemma is a doberman.)

many moons ago...

walking our dog at the time (mischa) thru UC Berkeley

and we came upon one of the bear statues..

Mischa suddenly saw it, and her hackles went way up, she got all low down and

started growling...

we couldn't get her to go past it

then there was the time we walked past a stone lion, and she didn't see it until

she was almost walking into it..and she tried t otake off in the other direction

the current kids..ruby has been frightened by a paper bag..so, i'm not sure i

want t oshow her the bear...

That's interesting - dogs usually seem to know. They must be good

sculptures.

HI Fraggle

Poor dogs. I should certainly keep Ruby away.

She has a fine-tuned awareness of when things are out of place. When

she was younger we used to put her toys on the coffee table, and she

would nose-bump them onto the floor.

On the other hand, when we had Gilbert, I was sitting on the floor

one day with both dogs when I looked past them and saw a roof rat hop

onto a chair. Neither dog noticed!! (And that was the last time I

left a door open next to the ratvine.) I have so much faith in dogs'

noses (and so much willingness to not have a rat in the house) that I

almost persuaded myself that since the dogs did not detect it, it

wasn't there.

About an hour later, I heard scrabbling as Jemma chased the foolhardy

rat through the kitchen... and, alas, into the basement. We never saw

it again.
