Energy Leases Prompt a Suit Sign In to E-Mail or Save This Print Reprints Share DiggFacebookNewsvinePermalink By FELICITY BARRINGER Published: March 14, 2007 WASHINGTON, March 13 — A decision by the Interior Department to reactivate 20-year-old energy drilling leases in southern Utah areas that have since been set aside for protection and recreation will be challenged in court on Wednesday by three environmental groups. The groups argue that the reactivation amounts to granting illegal new leases on protected lands. The Bureau of Land Management, the Interior Department agency responsible for the areas, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the Glen Canyon National Recreation area, has said its decisions on the 23 leases were correcting its failure to give the three leaseholders final rulings on their petitions when they were filed in the ’80s. A spokeswoman for the bureau’s Salt Lake City office, Mary Wilson, said in a statement that the applicants had procedural rights that the bureau could honor now only by taking action that it failed to take years ago to clear the way for the leaseholders to try to retrieve oil from tar sands in the protected areas. In a suit to be filed on Wednesday, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, the Wilderness Society and the National Parks Conservation Association say, “Conventional oil and gas or tar sands development in these remarkable landscapes will have dramatic, lasting negative impacts, including destruction of prehistoric and historic cultural resources, degradation of air quality and pristine night skies, loss of wildlife habitat.†When the leaseholders originally submitted their plans, the suit says, the Bureau of Land Management had 15 months to approve or reject them. A lawyer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Steven Bloch, said that when the agency had failed to act, it was up to the leaseholders to demand action before their rights to drill lapsed. Ms. Wilson said in her statement that any development would require environmental assessments. The bureau acted, she said, because “with the upsurge of the energy market and interest in a variety of energy sources (both conventional and unconventional) leaseholders were expressing interest in developing these leases.†“Tar sands development,†she added, “is largely experimental and not yet a proven, economical source of energy.†I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed. I feel, at this moment, more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless. " Lincoln in a letter to Col. Guest guest
For the UK I recently challenged Hartleys about their labelling, as their Jellies do not state what type of gelatine they contain. This was their reply........... Thank you for your recent email. The gelatine in Hartleys jelly is pork gelatine. If you require a jellysuitable for vegetarians the Hartley's Quickset and Hartley's ready to eatjellies are suitable. We hope this information is of use to you.Kind RegardsPeter H All New Mail – Tired of unwanted email come-ons?
