Guest guest
Hi C.B. Welcome, that stuff about tofu is such a load of bollocks, every now and again some "nutritionalist" (made up title) decides to play the misinformation game about soya.............dont believe the hype. The Japanese have been eating it for hundreds of years. It is healthier than meat, dairy and cruelty free. try : http://www.vegansociety.com/html/people/health/soyahealth.php Congrats on going vegie, hope you make it to vegan. If you have any questions please ask, we try and encourage and help one and other. The Valley Vegan................blue_my_mind <blue_my_mind wrote: Hello all, I'm `C.B.' and after 17 yrs my wife and I returning to vegetarianism. Right now we are still having some dairy, but limited mostly to an occasional dollop of yogurt. We have no plans in the immediate future to become vegan. We were both veggies in the past before we met, each for 5-6 yrs. Recently my wife said, kind of out of the blue, that she really had strong feelings about returning to it. She really hardly makes any kind of requests of me, so the least I could do is try to be supportive. And I must admit I was worried because when I was a veggie before, I found choices limited and while I survived quite well and healthily, it wasn't what I would call a sumptuous diet. However, I have weight to lose and also for the first time in my life I have had a bad cholesterol test, so I figured it was worth it to at least try. I do 90% of the cooking, so I went to the local organic grocery and was very skeptical, but purchased all kinds of things that weren't available 20 yrs ago when I did this before. Soy sausage, Boca patties, all sorts of `instead of meat' type of products and some faux cheese. And of course I bought tofu and The Big Book of Tofu Cooking. I cannot tell you how easy it has been. Our meals are, if anything, tastier than before and I'm losing a little weight too. We've always been good about eating lots of fresh vegetables, so at least I was familiar with how to fix those. Anyway, I've got lots more energy and I've been able to give up alcohol without it seeming like a punishment. I know that doesn't seem like it could be associated with diet, but I definitely think it has played a part. Also, I have been an acid reflux sufferer, and my digestion is 100% better than it has been in a long time after taking about two days initially to adjust. So everything is humming along great and I'm feeling happy about the whole change. However, a friend of mine found out I was going veggie and got all concerned. He said `Well I hope you aren't eating tofu, that stuff will kill you'. Then goes on about how eating more than 2 servings of tofu in particular, but all soy in general can cause brain damage, cancer, all kinds of horrible things not the least of which is impotence. So I searched the net and I found many articles stating exactly what he said was true, and I also found a lot of articles saying it was partially true, and then a bunch more saying it probably wasn't true, but not to eat more than 2-4 servings of soy per week just to be safe. And then there is a whole different camp that says fermented soy is okay, but tofu and soy milk should be avoided like the plague. So I am totally confused (or is that tofused?). Does anyone have first hand experience or have there been any studies specifically focused on the health drawbacks of soy? I have been loving my tofu scramble and `Gimme Lean' sausage and would rather not give it up, but I don't want to do myself a mischief when I'm actually trying to do good for myself. I don't eat soy at every meal, but I'm probably getting 3-4 servings a day on average. And there have been some days when I have gotten something soy at every meal of the day so I'm a bit worried now.Peter H Copy addresses and emails from any email account to Mail - quick, easy and free. Guest guest
Good article. I want to do research on the breast cancer thing. My wife's mom is a breast cancer survivor and my mom is currently battling with breast cancer, so that subject is really important to me. Definitely I want to make sure I am not giving my wife anything that would increase her risk. I just wish scientists would get back to doing real science and not always either be hyping something or being danger mongers. It makes it hard to know what to do. What they *want* us to do is take a bunch of pills that we become eternally dependent upon so they can make their fortunes. Guest guest
But the thing is how much is too much. Would eating nothing but tofu be too much, or is over 25g too much, or is it much lower than that? If I use the extra firm tofu, it has 8g of protein. Generally at dinner I am hungry and I probably eat half the package = 20g. If up to 25g is 'safe' then probably I should not be having tofu 'eggs' and soy 'sausage' for breakfast. I realized the softer the tofu, the fewer grams of protein, so maybe I should use the more medium softness varieties. On the other hand, I could just say 'get a grip' and do what makes my body feel good. Right now, I'm feeling better than I have in awhile. Maybe I'll even take up daily meditation again... of course I'm not as young as I once was, so it is more likely to become a midday nap.. haha. , fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote: > > grettings and welcome > on the soy thing...is all about moderation > most of those soy " stories " are badly done, and are aimed at a certain result before they are begun, so they are biased > buty..like i said..everything in moderation > yuo eat twinkies everyday and it ain't gonna healthy..you eat nuthin but carrots, and yeah..well.. > > and on the alcohol thing... > *faints* > > fraggle > > > >blue_my_mind <blue_my_mind > >Mar 16, 2007 4:22 PM > > > > Intro and Total Tofusion > > > >Hello all, I'm `C.B.' and after 17 yrs my wife and I returning to > >vegetarianism. Guest guest
I dont think you need worry, I normally have 1 or 2 cups of soy milk on my muesli in the morning , sometimes I also have soya dessert and tofu in 1 day, not every day, but som edays. I wouldnt worry about it too much, unless your diet was nothing but tofu! your body doesnt need that much protien ina day about 55grms for an adult, so dont worry. Guest guest
I know somebody (an official of the Vegan Society) who has eaten half a pack of tofu every day for many, many years. She is as fit as a fiddle, with enough energy to put most people to shame. As someone else pointed out - Oriental people have been consuming tofu for years without adverse effects. Guest guest
People say to careful about buying genetically engineered soy aka ge soy this what people are having "allergies"and brain tumors over! What ive read is that the ge soy starts producing pesticides well in your stomach this is whats written into the gene to supposedly protect the soy from insects ...If you like eating tofu and its a staple food in your diet ...its very inexpensive to buy a tofu maker. My guess is to buy the soy beans ceritified locally from local farmers make sure the beans are not imported ... even its marked "organic" in the store doesn't mean it came this country and really who knows what it is!!!!AOL now offers free email to everyone.
