that got your attention?!

hi, i'm blake, getting back into veganism after several years. i've

been lurking for a couple weeks. i saw the recent posts about the

dangers of soy. most, if not all, webpages and information about the

" dangers " of soy stem from a very small group of people who are

adherents of weston a. price, a dentist, who have founded a

" foundation " in his name:

http://www.westonaprice.org/splash_2.htm

despite their insistence on organic foods, pastured animals,

opposition to factory farming, whole grains and vegetables, minimal

processing, etc., they are die-hard meat, dairy and egg fanatics. i

know one personally. they believe that animals are there to be killed

and eaten, and that humans cannot be healthy without animal flesh.

they advocate drinking animal blood and eating organs. they also

believe that soy and soy products are enjoyed worldwide as a result

of a vast conspiracy by huge conglomerate soy manufacturers, who,

after making soybean oil, needed to find a use for the leftovers,

which they claim is...tofu and soy products!

taking a look at the top google " soy alert " results, i get the

following pages among the top 10:

http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html

http://www.ratical.org/ratville/soydangers.html

http://www.healthychild.com/soy-alert.htm

http://en.epochtimes.com/news/6-3-29/39839.html

http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/soy.htm

all of these pages cite (you guessed it) the weston a. price

foundation and/or sally fallon and mary enig. fallon and enig are

(you guessed it) president and vice president, respectively, of...the

weston price foundation:

http://www.westonaprice.org/board.html

they believe that all of our dietary ills are the result of 1).

eating processed foods (well, okay...), and 2). not eating vast

amounts of meat and dairy products. they deny that fat and

cholesterol are leading contributors to disease. pay a visit to

their site to get an idea of where they are at, and then make the

connections between most, if not all, of the " soy will kill " disinfo

on the web. their guru, dentist price, made all kinds of bizarre

claims about health after he visited native people who had no tooth

diseases and were " happy native " -types thanks to....eating lots of

animals and coconuts.

wiki's article also makes it clear that they are a lobbying

organization, and centered in washington dc:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston_A._Price_Foundation

here's a fun article about them:

http://www.milkismilk.com/blog/2005/09/weston-a-price-citizens-for-health-et-alc\

ranks-crackpots-and-thieves/

of course, we all know that soy is no " miracle food " ; these folks

reserve that claim for butter and duck fat:

http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/index.html

anyway, they are an interesting bunch: so right about so many things

(no processed food, organic, etc) but so wrong about others ( " asians

don't really eat soy " , you should drink blood, cholesterol is good

for you, there is a vast global conspiracy brainwashing you into

eating tofu, etc...).

enjoy, i hope,

blake

I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed. I feel, at this moment, more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless." Lincoln in a letter to Col. William F. Elkins on November 21, 1864

i don't know about the money angle. although they are a

" lobby " , they claim they don't get any money from the meat n

dairy industry:

http://www.westonaprice.org/funding.html

i think they appeal to folks who, number one, love meat and a

glass of milk who can't stand the idea of giving it up, and number

two, somehow believe that that kind of diet is revolutionary and

renegade. these people believe that there is a conspiracy (promulgated

by the vegetable oil industry, aided by their cronies " the

government " ) to get folks to eat less meat and dairy, if you can

believe it...to their " credit " , they are anti-factory

farming; they want the animal to live a nice life on the pasture

before they eat it.

there is also a strong cult of personality at work, based on dr.

price, and other elements of cultism as well:

What is occurring at

the moment is a " natural selection of the wise. " Those who

begin to make the right food choices have a chance of regaining their

health and producing children for the next generation. But those who

continue to eat processed foods--and who continue to believe the

lowfat propaganda-- will die out. The Weston A. Price Foundation was

set up to provide accurate information for those who are seekers of

the truth.

wow. that's a very " show us your papers " -type

mentality, eh?
