I hate the snow. I think of all the poor birds and animals out in the bleak

cold weather. Its nothing but misery, starvation and possibly death for

them. :( I hate snow for this reason.

The snow is not that bad on the animals here. The animals that stay for winter prepare themselves for such an event, by stockpiling food etc. The ones that don't hibernate develop thicker coats to help them survive. The birds that don't fly south are ones that are use to this type of weather, such as the Blue Jays. They too develop thick feathers to combat the inclimate weather.

Many don't survive the winter Talisman, its a fact. I'm a member of the RSPB as I adore birds. They are concerned about birds every winter especially when it snows. I'm inclined to believe them.

Hi Jane

I'm *not* a member of RSPB because I adore birds. I think their attempts to control populations by culling is utterly reprehensible.

Nature is nature. It happens - I'd rather see nature take its course than have humans mess about with it and cause more harm (as they undoubtedly would).

I'm sure many many more birds are killed annually by cats than by cold weather.

I can't stop the snow from falling, and I can't help enjoying it. If I

stayed indoors in a state of misery it would not save a birds life. I do,

however, constantly feed the birds with top quality grains and nuts to keep

them fit so they stand a better chance of surviving the cold. I do go out

in the garden in the mornings and break the ice on the three bird baths. I

have, over the years, planted about a dozen large trees, and hundreds of

bushes in my garden to give them shelter.

I love the snow.

I left the RSPB when they wanted to cull the Ruddy ducks for the crime of breeding with a native species. I don't support nazism, even in the animal kingdom.

An old Taoist story:

A Confuscianist and a Taoist are sitting down to a cup of tea together.

Unfortunately, they both take a sip before the tea has cooled enough and

burn their mouths. The confuscianist leaps up and runs around swearing and

cursing. The Taoist sits back and enjoys the taste of the tea.

brrr...disdain the snow

when i was a wee fragglin, and lived in the northeastern US..i bloody well loved

the snow...everything looked so neat and clean and it just covered up all the

pollution and trash....i would walk to skool(16 miles, uphill, both ways, thru

18 fott high snowdrifts, with no shoes...blather blather blather! :) ) and, i

had a mohawk, and by the time i reached my destintion, i would often have a big

white ' hawk from snow piling up on it and meltin' from the rest of me 'ead!

:)

then, sometime around, oh..18 er 19...snow somehow just didn't appeal to me

anymore..nor the cold...

i dislike winter now, even tho it doesn't snow here in the bay area..but, i've

lived in houses w/o heating for toooo long, and even if it doesn't snow, 40F is

damn freakin' cold at nite! winter, blah!

now, snow is nice to visit, once in awhile....as long as i can come home and

curl up in my 30 blankets and quilts and comforters and wotnot...

ah..when is spring!!???

different species can interbreed...look at coyotes and dogs and wolves.they are

different species, yet each can mate with the other and produce hybrids

(wolf crosses are a big problem here in the US)

ok..tigers and lions are different species, correct? yet, they can produce

offspring( a liger or a tion, depending on who the parents are)..

different species can mate if they are close enough..i think you are mistaking

species for genus

horses and donkeys can mate.

mallard ducks are generally hybrids here, because imported european ducks have

crossbred with them..

kingdom, phlum, order, genus, species, sub species..woohoo, i knew highskool

biology would come in handy

and, wolves and dogs i believe are different species..canius lupus, canis

What is snow? Is that like the ground up ice we put in our frozen

We have been camping, hiking, surfing, biking, sailing, and scuba

since January down here in south Texas (200 miles south of the

  • 10 months later...

We have snow here this morning - about 3 cm. It is quite a wet snow

though, so I don't think it will last long. The radio is saying that

the roads are 'treacherous' but even on our side roads there is not

much snow left and it is wet. I suspect that it may be more difficult

further west and north of us where there should be slightly deeper

snow.

Do Peter (Bristol) and Peter (Wales) and any other Brits here have

snow this morning???

Hi Peter

At least you had some - and a snowball fight - I bet the kids were surprised! We just had rain this afternoon, so there is very little snow left.

Re: Snow

Hi Jo

Only a small amount - but enough for a decent snowball fight with some kids who were nicking the snow off my car.

Although it has *just* started to snow again, so with a bit of luck we may have more later in the day...
