Hello Cynthia!

I'm glad to hear your computer problems are over for

now - I'm having difficulties with my anti virus

software - gives me a warning that i am not

sufficiently protected, then doesn't tell me how to

solve the problem! (I rue the day I left my computer

geek boyfriend!!) KYM

Hi Cynthia

Welcome back. There seem to be a lot of computer problems at

present. I am offline at home due to telephone line problems!

CKG Oct 7, 2008 9:35 AM I'm back..

Sorry it took me so long to get back to the list after bi-lateral breast surgery for breast cancer (my fourth go around with various types of cancer.) So far, so good, the lymph nodes were unaffected and therefore I do not need radiation. I may need chemo of some sort, some less benign than others, but the test on the tumor will not come back for a couple of weeks. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

My, my. I had written some about the pre-admission process to the hospital whereby I stunned everyone in the pre-admission office by discussing a Vegan diet. They had no idea what I was talking about and what to do about it. It seemed to be a big fat deal to them that it was a philosophical and health choice rather than a religious one. That made them feel like they were off the hook, so to speak. Finally, one pre-admission nurse told me to just bring my own food to the hospital. I almost retorted, “Should I bring a camp stove as well?†So, I brought some soups where all that had to happen was for someone to microwave something, some crackers, some canned fruits I think, and some soy milk in those boxes, etc.

Promptly upon waking from surgery the next day in my hospital room I was served a pancake breakfast with bacon and eggs.

I sent it back and mentioned, patiently, the word “Vegan†again.

For lunch, some sort of meat sandwich, milk, pudding, like that, etc.

I sent it back and mentioned, patiently, the word “Vegan†again.

Between these episodes, when I could get someone to pay attention, I had an assistant accomplish the extremely difficult job of nuking water so that I could at least have soup, while at the same time arguing with her about whether or not I should eat cheese, because after all, I need protein. The fact that I would not eat Jell-O out of the nurses’ refrigerator made her eyes cross.

Duh.

Finally, a Nutritional Department Aide came up to try to figure out what the hell was going on. I explained the concept of Vegan again.

This is funny – I started receiving menus to fill out promptly with written across the bottom: “Patient is Vegan. Send rice.â€

What the hell?

So I got a lot of fruit juice, vegetables swimming in butter which I could not eat, and fruit. Supplementing that with my “packed lunchâ€, it went okay.

I’ll be in touch.

you're bored in retirement cuz your energies drained away, your money had no answer, you just still want more! your life was never different then the guy next door!

all your neighbors are competitors, where'd you all go wrong? there never was a mountain to climb. potential friends are now your enemies, where'd you all go wrong? there never was a mountain to climb.

It's wonderful that you kept your sense of humor. I would probably have gone all contrarian and said my religion was vegan, and it was private and sacred so I couldn't tell them anything else about it, and all they needed to know was that I could not eat anything of animal origin.

Has anyone heard of any organized efforts to reform hospital food? I think everyone I've ever known who has eaten hospital food would agree it needs reform, but I haven't heard of anyone doing anything, except fast-food-chains winning the contract for hospital cafeterias. One way to do this might be modeled on the annual School Lunch Report Card from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the same organization that has gotten live animal labs out of a lot of med schools and pharma demos and supported dissection alternatives.

Best wishes for a continued good recovery.

My goodness...

In this day and age, you would think that hospitals would know what veganism is by now. They should teach this in the medical classes for dics and nurses--- On Tue, 10/7/08, fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote:
