Guest guest
yam lore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yam_%28vegetable%29 some you need to cook, others you don't. heh. " yam lore " . you don't get to say phrases like that too often.... blake Hmmm, I am still alive. I have been eating raw yams, which I purchased at whole foods the other day. Someone told me that yams are poisonous unless they are cooked. Does anyone know if there is any truth behind this? If so, I am wondering why I am not dead yet. -- Scott www.HikeHaven.com www.AntiFuel.com Minds are like parachutes, they only function when they are open. Guest guest
Scott- There is a difference between sweet potatoes and yams. Most those in the know say that what is grown in the US are sweet potatoes. Yams are the potentially poisonous ones because of the high level of alkali content when raw. Where do you live? Guest guest
I did look like the sweet potato in the photo. However, the inside was a different color. This may be because the one in thephoto is cooked."Scott Macri" <scottmRe: yamsTue, 24 Jul 2007 07:55:19 -0700 That is what I thought.I live in VA, USA. Guest guest
Hi Scott- This is only one website explaining the difference: http://homecooking.about.com/od/howtocookvegetables/a/sweetpotatodiff.htm I don't know what this confusion persists. I've talked with farmers who grow sweet potatoes. Both they and numerous others I've spoken to, and websites I've referred to all say only Sweet Potatoes grow in the US. Some sweet potatoes have orange flesh, and are labeled yams. Really, when it comes to nearly anything, just do an internet search. You'll be able to educate yourself in fairly short order. Guest guest
Here in the UK, we mostly only get the orange fleshed ones. I have sought out the white ones and they seem superoir to me in cooking, stay firmer. The Valley Vegan...........Scott Macri <scottm wrote: That is what I thought.I live in VA, USA. Guest guest
Hi Peter, Scott et al! So, my ignorance in yams / sweet potatoes is about to show... where do the purple ones come from? I've only ever come across these in oriental restaurants, and like them so much more than the orange ones I can buy in the local shops... Guest guest
Purple potatoes originated in Peru. Here's a great potato website that covers all the potatoes you could ever imagine, including the purple and the sweet varieties: http://www.deliciousorganics.com/recipes/potatoes.htm Marcy -------------- Original message -------------- "metalscarab" <metalscarab Hi Peter, Scott et al! Guest guest
Thank you thank you thank you thank you. (For the URL!) I love potatoes! Now, if I could only find these wonderful exotic types somewhere near me (Mid-Atlantic States, US). I want to try them all!
