I have to mention, that on that list of veg women is the original 'lettuce leaf lady" of PETA fame, Pamela Anderson. I mention this in answer to I believe Don Scott, who suggested it would be OK if the hot-dog-protest women were vegan.

 

There are enough vegans, women at that, that NON-veg women do not have to be hired to model for ads or for protest appearances.

 

I understand the arguments for and against this sort of marketing.

 

Personally, I see the strategy as playing the mainstream marketing game to get attention paid to an important issue.

 

Societal values of women-as-objects won't change any time soon. Neither will mistreatment of animals and humans. Different sorts of marketing reaches different sorts of people. PETA uses a variety of marketing techniques.

 

PETA's goal in utilizing women in marketing is worthy. Most advertising utilizing images of women is not.

Natalie Portman was definitely vegan last time I heard. Heather Mills

was a long term veggie who said she had now become vegan. I thought

Carl Lewis and Joaquin Phoenix were also vegan.

I don't agree that it is okay to use this form of advertising just

for our cause and not others!

 

The other point is that it doesn't get into mainstream quarters at

all, in the UK. The only place you see it is if you have d

to the PETA newsletter, or if you visit an animal rights stall. Most

people who are not already involved in animal rights steer well clear

of animal rights stalls because they think they are nutters!

 

I don't think the advertising works as well as PETA would like it to.
