Interesting you should bring this up just

now. I Googled “vegan beer list Maryland”

(where I live) today and I got a list of what have been suggested are Vegan

beers. I was particularly interested in Sam Adams light, so I emailed them to

make sure there is no isinglass involved as some companies might not

necessarily consider isinglass as an ingredient in beer. I am waiting for the

answer back. The list also has a link to a UK list. I would check anyway with

the company as conditions do change.

mmmmm........ vegan beer

Hey All-

I imagine you've had this discussion before, but how do we

know which beers are vegan?

Does anyone know a good information source about beers and

wines?

For example: A local brewer here in Berkeley, Bison

Brewing, says they don't filter their IPA. And they don't bother

filtering their stout since no one could see the difference anyway.

But I only found that out by asking the master

brewer. It's not like the bottles are labeled.

Are all IPAs and stouts unfiltered?

I've done various searches at various times, but haven't

found anything defiinitive.

It would sure be cool if we could get a labeling law

passed identifying the filtering media used.

This is one for the high priest of Bachus ( Fraggle), Until he can answer I will attempt to fill in from a British point of view. Generally speaking, microbreweries are less likely to use isinglass, and as a result be vegan, and it appears that there are more vegan choices in the US of A than over here, as britian uses more isinglass than anywhere else! ( Belgium/Holland/Germany ( catching up )). As far as I know , there is only one brewer in the UK makes a vegan stout ( Samuel Smiths ), all the bigger commercial ones use isinglass. You may want to look at joining Beer advocates if you are a fan of beer, and in the US, see : http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/113/571/ Marcy <imgreen03 wrote: Hey All- I imagine you've had this discussion before, but how do we know which beers are vegan? Hi Marcy

If no-one else answers, wait until Fraggle gets back on-line, and ask again... he's usually very helpful when it comes to alcohol :-)

I'll join if Homer Simpson belongs to Beer Advocates......... just kidding.

I like drinking it, but I'm not THAT into it. I'm more of a foodie than a drinkie.

Thanks for all the info. I didn't know about Brit beers, and Samuel Smith.

Hi Marcy

Fraggle is our expert on beers. Unfortunately he is recovering from

an accident at present, but I am sure he will be helpful in a little

while. In the meantime, Valley Vegan may have some information.

This is a great list, thanks!

Not every brand is listed, and they don't explain why they say "(obviously)" that stout is NOT vegan. I was told by one local brewer that stout is vegan because they don't have to filter it (since it's dark and you can't tell anyway).

Can anyone tell me what animal products stout contains?

Thanks again!
