Remember our soymilk thread?

Often an ingredient in rice and soy milks/drinks, carageenan, a natural gelatinous extract of seaweed is defined by wikipedia here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrageenan

And disparaged by Dr. Andrew Weil here:

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA44833

On a personal note, I've allergic to soy products, and this article confuses the allergy picture by suggesting it's the carrageenan that causes stomach distress, not the soymilk, as I had thought:

Happy reading!

p.s. my position with this, as with so many things, is what someone else said in the soy milk thread: in moderation it shouldn't be a problem. Over consumption can lead to problems, however.

The article in the last link was written by a member of the dairy board. I'd prefer to read an article written by someone who didn't have a financial stake in whether I buy cow's milk or soymilk. He's executive director of the "Dairy Education Board". Visiting his site: www.notmilk.com, you'll find that the articles listed are anti-dairy. For one, "The Famous Milk Letter", he explains what is wrong with milk.

In addition, if you want another article, here's the study done for the government, quoted by Dr. Andrew Weil in the 2nd article/link I sent you:

Review of Harmful Gastrointestinal Effects of Carrageenan in Animal Experiments

Interesting, I've had the same reaction when drinking different

brands of soy milk. It's the reason I originally switched to rice

milk....
