Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I was reading some celebrity gossip and fell upon Christie Brinkley's website. (christiebrinkley.com). Upon reading her site, I see that she is not only beautiful and an artist, but is also involved in environmental issues and cares about global warming. I was reading that she is involved in raising funds for "global warming" and is selling bracelets for $5.00 a piece. Unfortunately, all of the bracelets she sells is made of real leather. I am hoping that besides myself, people will write in to her company or her sponsors and make notice that it is not logical to kill cows for their skins and sell real leather bracelets for "global warming" when we all KNOW that killing cows for their skins is adding to the ruining of the world and adding to global warming, etc. I have already written to PETA re: this matter because they have a lot of "pull" with celebrities. I am hoping that a lot of the people out there will also write to voice their concerns. Putting that aside, I still think she means well and IS talented; however, killing cows for their skins is hypocritical to saving our environmental. Please let her know that she can make her bracelets out of other products besides cow or other animal skins. Thanks in advance, Gigi veganfitness Check Out the new free AIM® Mail -- Unlimited storage and industry-leading spam and email virus protection. Guest guest
What bothers me is that she is listed among the " famous vegetarians " on those many lists, but advertising these leather bracelets on her personal website doesn't sound very vegetarian to me... But I guess it's just the typical thing (with some notable exceptions, of course) about celebrities: you rarely know how " vegetarian " or " vegan " those people are and whether such issues are really important to them... , veganfitness wrote: > > Hi Everyone, > ?? Remember, vegetarians eat dairy. Dairy cows aren't immortal. Even Hindus in India are allowed to have leather if the cow died of natural causes. Guest guest
Wow. I was just thinking about this the other day as I was trying not to bash my head against the windshield while driving to work. Fred Grandy, who played “Gopher” on the TV program “Love Boat” a very long time ago, is a radio commentator in the Washington D.C. area in the mornings. I listen to him sometimes with his radio partner. He makes a BIG FAT HAIRY DEAL of the fact that he is a Vegan, which is okay, but come on, sometimes one needs to give it a rest. So, imagine my surprise back awhile when he did voice-over radio commercials for a product we have here in the US called “Better ‘n Eggs” which is eggs with the cholesterol removed or something- and how WHENEVER HE EATS EGGS, that is what he eats. It might have been some other similar egg “product”, which is just eggs chemically altered, but you get my drift. If I didn’t have a life I would probably email him and blast him, but I am just too damn tired at the moment. Guest guest
I've always been a bit miffed at those vegans who wear leather and wool but justify it by saying they bought it used. I get that they didn't buy it new, however it seems to just make it harder for other vegans when non-veg's see this and think it's ok to wear leather, etc. I don't usually broadcast that I'm vegan, but I do have a "vegan compassion" t-shirt. I forgot and wore it to the grocery store one day and I couldn't believe the nasty looks and comments that were made to me. Do you think Fred Grandy made those commercials before he became vegan? Guest guest
I expect people feel the same about vegans advertising themselves as they do about Christians in the street trying to convert people. Guest guest
Hi all, I have read some vegans say they will wear the leather that is still in their closet and not buy anymore of it. I do not wear leather anymore and made a conscious decision to give away all of my genuine leather, regardless of how sentimental it was or how much I loved it. I even gave away an almost new Betsey Johnson gorgeous leather belt with red hearts all over that I NEVER wore; to a good friend of mine. The rest of my stuff was given to my twin sister! Now people will not see me with leather and think of me as hypocritical. But, to each his own. That's my take on it. heartwerk <jo.heartwork Wed, 29 Aug 2007 2:46 am Re: Leather Bracelets I expect people feel the same about vegans advertising themselves as they do about Christians in the street trying to convert people. Guest guest
I find it so strange that people criticize vegans or vegetarians. We're promoting the end of murder to animals. How can someone criticize that? Logically they can't. But my "vegan guru" -- CompassionateCooks.com -- says we're a mirror to others. Others see us and actually see what they don't like about themselves. But I still find it odd. I grew up eating meat and didn't stop till I was 29 (last November). But when I met someone who was vegetarian, I wasn't all defensive and hating. I admired him for it but figured it'd never work for me.Leslie Davis <tofuchick wrote: I've always been a bit miffed at those vegans who wear leather and wool but justify it by saying they bought it used. Guest guest
I just realized that I still own two leather items...a belt from Austria and hiking boots. I haven't worn either of them in well over 20 years. I've got some donating to do! Thanks! LOL , veganfitness wrote: > > > ?? Guest guest
Nope, he was going on and on about being a Vegan and then the commercial kept airing during the same broadcast about these “eggs” being the ONLY eggs he will eat. And, they are not Vegan egg substitute; they are eggs that I can only call chemically altered – cholesterol has been reduced or something. But he is funny at any rate, keeps me awake during my 1 ½ hour drive to work and 1 ½ hour drive home. I am NOT eco-friendly, I admit, but you have to go where the job is. I am a LARGE lady who drives a VERY small car, however. I haven’t heard him do one of these commercials lately. Perhaps someone blasted him about it. Guest guest
Hi Tracy I think you've struck the main difference between those who will never go vegan, and those who are just waiting for their brains to get the message! People only tend to get defensive if they perceive what they're seeing as a threat to themselves - i.e. if they did what they really felt they should, then it would mean thinking about things. Those people who actually like thinking may perceive veganism as something unusual or odd, but will take it in their stride, and begin thinking about it!! BB Peter - Tracy H. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 7:39 PM RE: Re: Leather Bracelets I find it so strange that people criticize vegans or vegetarians. I forgot and wore it to the grocery store one day and I couldn't believe the nasty looks and comments that were made to me. Do you think Fred Grandy made those commercials before he became vegan? Guest guest
I think I know the type of " egg-like " substance you mean, sounds like some stuff my dad had to eat. Once again, he's a public personality, and a lot of people will get their concept of a vegan from him, and that's a mixed message if he's promoting anything related to eggs. I used to drive a Jeep...talk about not eco-friendly. <grin> It bit the dust so right now I'm on bike and foot until I decide what to do for a car. I have thought about a small car, but I run into a huge problem of not enough leg room! LOL I've read about various hybrids and even a new Hummer that's supposed to be solar/algae that actually puts oxygen back into the air even at rest. It's not due out for quite a while though, so unless I move to a place with public transit, I may have to do something else. Winter cold and ice aren't exactly my favorite things. LOL I've heard about DC traffic! My daughter lived there for a term, living in Maryland but working in DC. She could take buses and walk 2 miles and get to work in less time than her roomate who drove into DC. I think it's tough to be eco-friendly on many levels. Sometimes just to function we have to weigh options. I'm trying, without success, to convince the owner of the complex I live in to do basic recycling. , " ckg " <cynthiaandtheothers wrote: > > Nope, he was going on and on about being a Vegan and then the commercial > kept airing during the same broadcast about these " eggs " being the ONLY eggs > he will eat. Guest guest
When my daughter went veg, she decided to " share " the concept with all of her young friends. Some liked the idea, but their parents sure didn't! My daughter ended up letting the moms talk to me, still can't thank her enough for giving out our number to hostile, rude, and quite vocal moms! As I listened to their rants, I realized that they mostly seemed scared, or threatened. It seemed that they felt their child was telling them that the food they made was " wrong " so they took it deeper, like the child was saying the parent was " wrong " . The more vehement the child's reaction the more flak I'd hear from the parent, ie one kid went so far as to say meat was evil, and the parent yelled at me that we thought she was evil. Usually by the time the parent stopped yelling at me to breathe I'd jump in and compliment them on doing such a great job raising a child who thought for herself and wanted to do such a kind thing for helpless animals. <grin> I noticed the same sorts of attitudes with my extended family as well. My daughter and I are still not included in any " family " events because they claim we wouldn't be comfortable. I suspect it's because we remind them, solely through our actions, that there is a kinder choice and they aren't making that choice. I wish that criticism was all we got around here though. My daughter and I have been through some openly hostile attacks. , " Tracy H. " <denise_h22 wrote: > > I find it so strange that people criticize vegans or vegetarians.
