I want my cats to go vegan but I'm concerned about the lack of taurine that would be in a strictly vegan diet. My 17-year-old cat gives me dirty looks when I do break out the veg food. Not a happy camper! I have a total of 4 cats, one of whom will snitch my tempeh or tofu if I'm not careful, and she loves to eat brussels sprouts, just plain. Go figure. I also have two vegan dogs, both labs, and they're about 10 and 11 years old and have been vegan for about 10 years. They chose it, seriously! They're in such good shape the vet made me prove their ages! <grin> Oh, yeah, HI everyone, I'm new to the group, but not to veganism. I'm in west central Ohio, and as far as I can tell, I'm the only vegan in town. My daughter, who just recently moved to Indianapolis, after graduation, is the only face-to-face vegan I know. I'm just now going back through messages so I can get " caught up " , and from what I've read so far, y'all sound interesting and fun. Thanks! Guest guest
true, cats do need Taurine. but, most veggie cat foods should contain the amino acid nowadays, at least the ones i've seen. http://www.vegancats.com/ oh, and welcome cheers fraggle tofuchick24 Aug 27, 2007 1:25 PM Re: I'm an idiot and Hi << , troOn <troon wrote:coz I live with 5 vegan cats & a vegan dog>>That is really interesting that your cats are vegan. Actually, she was responsible for me going ovo-lacto. We were eating pork sausage and my daughter wanted to watch a show about pig slaughterhouses. I knew I wasn't going to keep eating, but she didn't really seem to mind...that is until I pointed out to her that what was in the sausage was a result of what she was watching. I still didn't " get " veg. After she returned from vomiting, she took both of our plates and dumped them in the trash. She told me that she was going vegetarian. It was so weird, it was like a " lightbulb " moment for me and I realized I " could " be one too. I'd never eaten much meat, and I couldn't let myself think about it at all. I went vegan about a year and a half later, the day after I learned what it was. LOL My daughter went fully vegan about 5 years ago. <grin> Even though she went vegetarian when she was 12, she went through a lot of horrible things at her schools...including being physically beaten by 5 girls, smeared with meat and milk. That was just the start of the problems, but the perpetrators were " never at fault " . I believe that if I'd raised her veg that I'd have been able to prepare us both better for the onslaught of all the negativity, and avoided a bunch of medical problems. Within 6 months of my daughter going vegan she no longer needed her 5 inhalers and other meds for asthma. Oh gosh I'm sorry to talk so much! It's SO nice to be able to talk with people that I don't feel like I have to defend myself.
