My daughter, 19, has recently become a vegetarian. She has just begun

college in Florida and she tells me that the vegetarian meal options

on her campus are very limited. I wondered if there is any sort of

vegetarian mail order meal type of service that anyone might be aware

of. She has access to a small refridgerator, but no freezer, and to a

microwave, but not a conventional oven. Thanks.

Hi Bob

Where do you live. Some of us are in Britain, a lot in the States.

Let us know where you are and hopefully someone will be able to help

you.

The first thing I would tell her is to avoid using the microwave at all costs, as it has detrimental consequences for the human body. I am not sure about packaged meals, but then again, I am against that processed stuff. If she is serious about her health, she might want to stock up on almonds, sunflower seeds, raw fruits and veggies, etc....--ScottDon't under estimate the wisdom of nature. If man made it, don't eat it.Raw Vegan--- robert.dangel wrote:"Bob Dangel" <robert.dangel Subject: Advice for new veganMon, 3 Sep 2007 08:33:34 -0400

Bob, here's a link that has some ideas for vegetarian college students: http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-teens/college-vegetarianism.htm Here's one from that site: Get to know your dining hall directors. They are usually around during meals, or you can schedule an appointment. I met with some of these people to discuss ways to make the dining halls more vegetarian friendly. For example, I requested that the dining hall offer soymilk, and for portobello mushrooms at the grill. ... To my surprise, they kindly honored ... these requests. Hi Bob,

My daughter just spent the last five years as a vegan college student.

She went to a veg-friendly college, but they didn't always " get "

vegan...she actually got food poisoning a few times from the college

fare.

How " into " healthy eating is your daughter? There is one kind of vegan

ramen noodles...not that great nutritionally but my daughter would add

peas to it.

Soymilk, either in the refrigeratable containers or as a powder, works

well with cereals. :) Can your daughter have a hotplate?

Cans of nuts, especially almonds, seemed to go over well. I think

there are some meals that are " ready to eat " , or with little prep, I'll

ask my daughter about them.

Dehydrated fruits, trail mixes, and even some dried veggies are pretty

good study snacks.

I used to send my daughter care packages but she'd always say that many

of her friends were scarfing it down too. <grin>

Is she near a Trader Joe's? They have some really cool meal kits that

don't require cooking...like vegan sushi. There's also items like

hummus and pitas, baba ganosh (sp?), and tabouli that she can keep in

the fridge. If you have a Kroger's, they carry an " everything " bagel

that's actually labelled vegan! It's their store brand. Those can be

topped with peanut butter, tofutti " cream cheese " , etc. :)

Hope that helps? I'll let you know as soon as I find out more info on

the " meal kits " .

BTW, Spirutein powder is really good...I like the choc/pb with regular

soymilk. :) There are other flavors that would work with juices.
