Guest guest
Penguin populations in trouble, climate cited as one cause First, the good news: there's an International Penguin Conference! Who knew? Now, the bad news: at said conference, taking place this week in Tasmania, a team of researchers has reported that the world's penguins are in trouble. The 17 species " face serious population decreases throughout their range, " the team wrote, adding that officials, scientists, and the public need to take action if there's any hope of reversing the trend. OK, ready for the really bad news? " Penguins are the bellwether of climate change, " says seabird ecologist Eric Woehler. " As birds they're pretty much at the top of the food chain and act as two-footed bio-indicators of the health of the environment, marine and terrestrial. " So ... the bio-indicators are dying? Guest guest
It's now official...I'm having a truly dense day...I actually read the article and well geesh... sorry. There was a PBS show on penguins here recently...and this time I've got the right creature! It showed how they took care of their young and a lot of the hazards they face, and how climate changes are making it worse. What really bugged me about that though was the film crew was " ok " with letting a whole bunch of penguins die trapped in this ditch. I can't remember what they called it exactly but it looked like it wasn't all that much deeper than the penguins were tall, but they couldn't get out. And they showed a mother who came back late to feed her baby and the baby had died, she was scooting the corpse around. I thought it was really awesome, though, that the males would stand for months with the babies up on their feet and covered to protect them, while the females left to find food. , " Tracy H.
