Why does REAL GOOD food have to be expensive?

I mean honestly? I know it takes longer to grow organic healthy food.

But sheehs I think it should be illegal to serve NONE organic tortured

or disgusting food (ie; meats, eggs, milk or veggies, fruits), or

atleast priced higher SOOOOOO people can try to eat healthier. Eating

vegan is so high on our budget (being a family of 9 & plus animals; My

birds, a couple of cats, 2dogs, 3 few fish, rats and 3 snakes). PLUS

if people were forced to buy healthier foods instead of gross yucky

food, people would have a more understanding for us Vegans AND the

animal world.

Ya know. NO! Just eliminate ALL animal farms and I am sure we can

replace that farm space with natural wildlife AND fruit and veggie

and... well vegan farms.

Ok.. Just had to vent :)

We are in modern times, wasn't long ago we KNEW what we were eating

because we or our neighbors grew it, or raised it. Now we have to

have blind faith in companies and corporations to sell us what they

say they are selling us.

Veganism is justified just for above reasons alone (i.e. growth

hormones, drugs, horrible living conditions, cannabalistic feeding

practices). If I was an animal I would want to be free, living in

nature, and you would have to be good to catch me. Yes I would prefer

a turning back of time in regards to this and many other modern

problems.

It can be expensive, but have you checked out farmer's markets? Ask

the farmer, he's the one usually there selling, what kind of seeds he

uses, pesticides, etc. He might not be certified organic, but if he

doesn't use genetically modified seeds and does clean farming, it's

definately better than what you'll find at a store! :) And if you

can get a bunch at one time, you can put it back for the off season.

Now if I only knew how to can I'd be set! LOL

And fwiw, I've always wondered, too, why leaving stuff out makes it

cost more! :)

well..there are ways to get cheaper "real food" as you call it...

try certain farmers markets, get to know the producer/farmer, etc..you'd be surprised at how many deals they'll toss you

as for the why

economics...

1. economy of scale..."conventional" farming, with all its chemicals and poisons, is HUGE, it dominates the playing field. it has all the distribution, growing plans, and sales forces sown up and down pat. lil organic family farm just can;t compete with conagra

2. larger farms get bigger tax breaks and subsidies.

3. organics, tho growing, and related fields, are still a niche market.

4. being certified organic costs a bundle.

etc and so forth

I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small

Never thought about the problems of this planet at all

Global warming, radio-active sites

Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! No!

Why think of all the bad things when life is so good?

Why help with an 'am' when there's always a 'could'?

Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea

Outside of California, it's foreign policy

I don't want changes, I have no reactions

Your dilemmas are my distractions

I never looked around, never second-guessed

Then I read some Howard Zinn now I'm always depressed

And now I can't sleep from years of apathy

All because I read a little Noam Chomsky

I'm eating vegetation, 'cause of Fast Food Nation

I'm wearing uncomfortable shoes 'cause of globalization

I'm watching Michael Moore expose the awful truth

I'm listening to Public Enemy and Reagan Youth

I see no world peace 'cause of zealous armed forces

I eat no breath-mints 'cause they're from de-hoofed horses

Thank you those who responded to my venting.

I have not been to a farmer's market yet. I am worried he may lie

and say he is organic. But how do I know he is telling the truth or

not. Farmere's markets are usually much cheaper than say; Safeway or

Trader Joes.

Well, if you've ever grown your own vegetables organically, it's not

so much leaving stuff out as paying attention to the whole shebang,

rather than only to the profits.

Organic gardeners and farmers grow soil, primarily. We know that

inorganic fertilizers kill off the beneficial critters in the soil

(bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc.), so the most important thing to do

is to feed these critters, who then make nutrients available to the

plants. We feed them with high-quality compost (preferably homemade

or made on site), as well as mulch, and occasionally, compost teas.

Flavor is another thing that organic growers value. This means

growing different varieties, often with shorter (or no) shelf life,

and using techniques that improve flavor even at the expense of

yields.

For instance, at my community garden, last year I grew the same

variety of tomato as another gardener. We both used compost, but I

watered mine every 2 weeks, and she watered hers every 2-3 days. Mine

had an incredibly rich, sweet/tart flavor, but yielded only 2 or 3

daily at the peak of the season. Hers easily yielded ten times that

number, but were bland and had an " off " taste.

This spring, another gardener mentioned that her snow peas did not

taste good. I had just picked some of mine, which were sweet. The

only difference we could figure out was that she had fertilized hers

(with an organic fertilizer), and I'd used only compost.

Having grown my own strawberries, I cannot eat commercial ones (even

99 percent of farmers' market ones) anymore! They're not the same, or

even close.

if you go to an accredited farmers market, they'd get into serious legal trouble if they lied.

besides, this is their livelihood....if said farmer lied, he'd not only open him/herself up to legal action, but could ruin there chances of continuing selling at markets. word would spread.

here, stands at the farmers market are clearly market are clearly marked if certified organic...

you could also just talk to the farmer..get to know em,, ask questions

i know of farmers who aren't certified organic, but follow even stricter (biodynamic or permaculture) regimes, they just can't afford to be certified, and the USDA rules are more geared toward large corporate farms then family farms

Here's some more evidence of what I mentioned earlier in the week.

A report issued this week examined several recent studies by food

scientists, nutritionists, growers and plant breeders. It found clear

evidence that as the produce we eat gets larger, its vitamins, minerals and

beneficial chemical compounds significantly diminish, as do taste and aroma.

Growing bigger tomatoes and ears of corn leads to a bigger yield for the

producer, but the trade-off is the lower nutritional value.
