Guest guest
To All, Although I was not born this way I am [now] allergic to peanuts, peanut oil, peanut butter and so on. To be quite honest it was my favorite thing to eat, but now if I eat it I will not be able to breathe. I was wondering if there was a way in which I can enjoy the peanut flavor without the actual peanut? I have been getting rid of the recipes that contain any form of peanut with much sadness. Finding a replacement is probably a major stretch, but I figure it could not hurt to ask. Danell :-)
Guest guest
Hi, Danell! Don't get rid of your recipes -- let's find substitutes! For oils -- sesame oil (?) For butters -- there is still tahini (sesame seed butter) and other nut butters, like cashew butter. If you aren't allergic to other nuts, you could just substitute other nuts for the peanuts. Hope this is helpful. Karen Danell & Tony Cascio wrote: > To All, > > Although I was not born this way I am [now] allergic to peanuts, peanut > oil, > peanut butter and so on. Guest guest
Danell: Recipes are just guidelines, not hard written rules 95% of the time - that's why there are so many of them! I would expect that there is a good substitute for every peanut product. For peanut oil, use another vegetable oil, or maybe use sesame oil which is somewhat similar. I think that they both have high smoke points. The Vegetarian Times website suggests substituting almonds for peanuts. And the folks at mayohealth.org say: http://www.mayohealth.org/mayo/9912/htm/foodlabels.htm Know the exact ingredient(s) you want to avoid. Say that you have a peanut allergy and find peanut oil listed on a food label. Before you eliminate this food from your diet, ask your allergist for guidance. " People with peanut allergies usually are not allergic to the oil component, " says Dr. Li. " In general, it's the protein component in peanuts that causes problems. If you find the peanut oil in pure form without the protein, you may not have to worry. " I would expect that someone on this list will know a good substitute for peanut butter. Tahini??? Soynuts vary in flavor, you may have to try several brand to find one that satisfies you.
