Guest guest
Thanks for all of the fantastic recipes today; i'm planning on making the olive/bean dip with the baked pita chips tonight..I'll let you all know how it goes =) I was wondering if anyone has any experience using Nutritional Yeast. A lot of my vegetarian/ vegan friends use it quite often, and rave about it. What is it used for? What's in it? What does it taste like? Have any good recipes/ tips for using it, and incorporating it into my diet? (BTW, I'm VEGAN) Thanks for your help, and I appologize for ALL of the questions Sincerely, Erica
Guest guest
hi erica ... nutritional yeast - hmmm, where to start? first thing i have to say is that " red star " is the only way to go - when i first got into nutritional yeast (b/c a vegan restaurant here serves " crispy fried tofu " and she was generous enough to tell me how to make it!), i bought the wrong kind and couldn't figure out why it didn't taste like the restaurant (and hence why my five yr old wouldn't touch it!) anyway, i discovered that there is a big difference (imho) between nutritional yeast and red star nutritional yeast - unfortunately i don't know whether red star is a brand or what it really stands for ... maybe some more experienced veggies can help ... i am lucky enough to be able to buy it in the bulk section of my local health food store and i recommend you see if you can do that too - that way you can try a bit and see if you like it - i think it's one of those things that some people just can't stand! (my m-i-l is one of them) but it's a big hit in my house and fills the 'void' for the quick and easy last minute dinners -- here's how we make crispy fried tofu in our house (low fat lovers please ignore!) an easy recipe to test your taste for it ... heat some olive oil in a frying pan (not non stick as the oil just slides around - it's better to have a thin layer of oil in a well seasoned pan) - slice a block of firm tofu into squares - dip each square into a shallow dish of tamari, then into a dish of nutritional yeast, then pan fry for about 5 minutes each side - great with plain brown rice and a salad - all my kids love a few shakes of nutritional yeast on their rice too let me know if you like it, and if so, i can send you some other ideas for how to use it tara
Guest guest
My two cents- I've used it once fora vegan cream sauce.. It kind of thickens and adds a somewhat cheesy /buttery flavor...i've never used it again so actually these correspondances may help me use up the giant tub of it I have! haha Marsha Hite <mjhite on 07/10/2000 04:30:02 PM P or T <p-pie cc: p1x1edust, Veg-Recipes (bcc: Jamie Orozco/SHI) Re: Nutritional Yeast? Guest guest
Hi! My favorite way to use nutritional yeast is to sprinkle it on popcorn. It is absolutely delish that way!- It's not salty at all, but it gives kind of a cheese-ish flavor. Verna
