Seriously, it is a chili sauce which is available in Asian markets and the Asian foods section of many supermarkets. It has the look and consistency of ketchup, but is made from chiles, vinegar, garlic, salt and sugar. The brand in my cupboard is called Tuong ot Sriracha and comes in a transparent plastic bottle with a green dispenser top. It would be great in any dish in which you're looking for a sweet and spicy-hot flavor.
Guest guest
Thanks for clarifying the sauce. I thought it could have been some kind of Vietnamese or Thai sauce. I just recently bought the book " The Asian Grocery Store Demystified " by Linda Bladholm. I love it! I now know what all those little bottle were when ever I go to my local store. I like the fact that she describes how some examples of the packaging look and gives brand names! Here's her description: First made in the seaside town of Sriacha in Southern Thailand, it is a mixture of chili, tomato, salt, garlic, sugar and vinegar with a bright red color and the consistency of ketchup. It makes a good all-purpose chili sauce and table condiment. Sold in 17 and 24 oz plastic squeeze bottles with green caps and a rooster logo, made by Huy Fong Foods, Inc., in California, following the original Thai formula. Imported brands include D & D Gold and Shark Sriacha.
