Guest guest
just wondering, how long everyone on this list has been vegan and why they decided to make that change of lifestyle? I let go of all animal products in my diet about six and half years ago (and other non-dietary products followed). It was initially a question of animal ethics, although now there are a million reasons why I wouldn't eat animal products again, including health and the environment. I can't help but to imagine that everything you eat becomes who you are. The body constantly renews its cells, and takes the substance for new growth from what you consume today. How awful to think that dead animals and animal products have been broken down to make up the cells of peoples bodies! Not me, no thanks! peace to all anastasia. Guest guest
Hi Anastasia > just wondering, how long everyone on this list has been vegan and why > they decided to make that change of lifestyle? Good question. For me, it was a culmination of several things - I was already feeling a bit guilty about eating meat, which was the " start " . Then, about 4 years ago I answered a pro-fox hunting letter in our local paper - as a result I got invited along to a local animal rights group, and got fairly heavily involved in all sorts of animal rights issues including hunt sabbing and campaigns to help improve the lot of the farm animals being sold in the local market - obviously, being connected to that sort of group, I suddenly found out an awful lot about what actually happened to farm animals, and what I was helping to support by continuing to eat meat - and what I was putting in my body when eating it - and I reckon that would be enough to turn anyone vegetarian! I went fully vegan about a year later - I'm not quite sure exactly what " clicked " to make that happen - but I was on holiday in Germany at the time, and just decided to go vegan - completely messed up our food plans for the holiday too (I'm sure Jo will tell you more about that! :-)) I certainly wouldn't be able to go back to eating anything " animal " now - it amazes me that I ever used to enjoy eating it - I'm one of those sorts who said for years that I'd go vegetarian, but I enjoyed meat too much and didn't like vegetables - and when I finally did it, couldn't understand why I hadn't done it years earlier! Guest guest
I became vegan overnight at age 18 [30+ yrs ago] having decided at age 7 {after stamping on ants one hot summer afternoon]that I wouldn't cause an animal's death any more . My mother had told me I would die so I put the idea on hold . I knew no veggies and it was a month before I read the word vegan and realised thats what I was . I was relievd to find out that others existed because that meant I wouldn't die too soon!!!! There were 2 health stores in Brighton {home town] so it wasn't that difficult {no soya millk then tho'] I later joined the HSA and animal rights groups that were starting up[in London ] I now have 4 vegan sons and live in Nottm and help Veggies on Demos All chemicals get recycled .When I'm dead and buried.and some of my substance is absorbed by plants etc you might eat some of me . But I wont mind [i do hope I can give animal eaters indigestioin tho' ] - <anastasiastatham Saturday, July 07, 2001 9:37 PM just curious...... > just wondering, how long everyone on this list has been vegan and why > they decided to make that change of lifestyle? > > > I can't help but to imagine that everything you eat becomes who you > are. It must have been a bit tough being vegan 30 years ago? Presumably there wasn't the same availability as there is now? > I now have 4 vegan sons and live in Nottm and help Veggies on Demos Do you know Rosie Prentice? I used to know her on another mailing list, and I'm sure she said she helped out with Veggies. > All chemicals get recycled .When I'm dead and buried.and some of my > substance is absorbed by plants etc you might eat some of me . Guest guest
Is soya milk something new in the Western World? I just assumed it had been available here for a long time. You must have found it really tough when you first became a vegan. Good for you for roughing it out and sticking to your principles! Talking of soya milk, I bought Provamel's vanilla milk for the first time last week. Its delicious! Guest guest
Hi Angie > Had to give up cereals foul with just water!!! No ice cream !!! I'd prepared myself for the " no ice cream " when I decided to go vegan - but was never happier than when I discovered Swedish Glace and Tofutti - and was then rather annoyed that I'd missed out on them for such a long time - much nicer than the dairy stuff! *drooling, looking for tub of Swedish Glace*! Guest guest
> just wondering, how long everyone on this list has been vegan and why hey decided to make that change of lifestyle? I will have been vegan for 2 years this September and was persuaded to make the change after reading some leaflets about milk and egg production!! That was in the February of '99 but it wasn't practical to do it straight away wot with school, exams and holidays!! So i gradually cut down my dairy and egg intake for 7 months and finally went vegan on my first day of college!! Sas

Guest guest
Fraggle My husband and I were veggie for a while about thirty years ago, for about a year. It was just for health reasons. I didn't think about the animals at all. This time round we started of for health reasons, and gradually found out about animal suffering from our hunt sab friends, and have become more and more fussy about what we eat and what ingredietns are in all the products we use. I too am still using up all my old leather shoes, which will take quite a while, but I feel it would be a big insult to the animals to actually throw them away. Of course, I will not buy leather again. Jo
