Newbie here, both on the list and as a vegan. I must admit, I'm

determined, but finding things difficult (so many things to stop

eating!) Any tips for making the transition?

Transition from??? What? Were you a meat eater? A vegetarian? I was a

vegetarian for nine years before deciding to become a vegan. Its relatively

easy when you do it that way. Tell us more!

It's not that difficult once you get used to it.

I made a gradual transition to being a vegan. I'd say that it's more

important to cut the bulk of the suffering out of the diet than to feel

guilty about every last shred. Even if that means resorting to Linda

McCartney stuff-with-albumen-binding during your transition.

Once you get used to it, you know which foods to pick up, and have

probably learnt a few recipes, and picked up a few personal staples.

(One of my staples is lettuce and tomato sandwich with tahini. Which is

about as international as chips and mushy peas.) One of the good things

about being vegan is it forces you to look at different things for

snacks and meals.

What are you finding most difficult?

Where in Scotland are you? You know, I was about to mention a Scottish

vegan I've met ... then I realised how stupid it would be. As if you

knew everyone in a nation of three million?

I'm actually new to Scotland. I'm working here as an aupair... I'm

really a born and bred BC Canada girl.

Most difficult... hmm... sweets and cakes and prepackaged foods that the

kids are always eating (and leaving little tempting bits of). I've cut

out meat a while ago, and much of my life didn't use milk for cereal

and stuff because of a slight intolerance that just made life

uncomfortable. Its the hidden things.

I must say though, I AM learning to cook, which would shock absolutely

anybody who's known me for more than a month.

How about this - coat some dates (I use Iranian) in cocoa (I use Green

and Blacks) by shaking them together in a tin or something? These are

messy, but absolutely delicious.

Cakes rise with the aid of egg. Unless you cook them yourself, they

won't be vegan :(.

But a lot of sweets are okay.

Picture the face of the animal involved --dripping with blood It

helped me and it still has the same affect when I see others eating animal

stuff ------although this rarely happens now. Angie
