Agreed - the RSPB have a policy of killing crows, black headed gulls, deer and pine-marten to protect one species - the Capercaillie (a turkey sized grouse) - it was thought the capercaillie was extinct but the Victorians reintroduced them in 1837 for shooting, and some have still lingered on - but not a great deal - largely due to habitat loss - but anyway, lets just go and obliterate a large proportion of other species, so this one can live - > Nature is nature. It happens - I'd rather see nature > take its course than have humans mess about with it > and cause more harm (as they undoubtedly would). Culling the dear, has led to an increase in the Caledonian Pine Forest, the Capercaillie habitat, but these birds also need a lot of open ground, - but because there are no deer eating the grass and keeping the ground vegetation down, the capercaillie are suffereing - Conservation at the moment is very much a suck-em-and see approach, and we shouldn't really interfere until we know the consequences of what we're doing - Everything in moderation and that includes, deer, crows, pine-marten, regenerating pine forest and then capercaillie - You can't penalise a species just because it has adapted to its environment - but that's what we do all the time - If it's not an aesthetically pleasing little thing, or its a scavenger or opportunist, then nobody will miss it, so lets get rid of it - <confused & annoyed about conservation as it stands today> Joeann ______________ Nokia 5510 looks weird sounds great. Guest guest
Joeann I didn't realise they had been like that with other birds! Guest guest
Hi Jo, Yeah, sad but true - In the highlands at the moment, there is a big drive to promote/protect the Capercaillie, which is seen as the next 'flagship' bird (it had been the Osprey) - and unfortunately that means killing others - I think part of the problem is because the RSPB are a voluntary body, they depend on memberships and donations for all their income - and so they are swayed by what the 'people' want - and supposedly now we want Capercaillie - but at what cost? ...blah, its annoying...
