sadness

I just found out today that Whoopi, the cat whom I called housemate and friend for many years had to be put to sleep on Monday :( She apparently had really bad kidney problems and was in bad shape..as of late, she had lost alot of weight, and was acting strange..yowling at times, often seemed like she was in pain. This was not like here. She remained a sweetheart and an affectionate friend to her last days. I will miss her and her unique ways..the way she laid with one paw crossed over the other...her fondness for potato chips and mustard...the conversation she would hold(if you imitated her meow, she would do it back to you,and would continue back and forth until you stopped)....*sigh*...this really put a damper on my day...she lived to be 14,I know she had a full life, and take comfort knowing she no longer feels any pain...but I do and will continue to miss her.

I'm so sorry for you Chris. I now how sad it is to lose an animal, especially a cat. They become great friends and all have their adorable individual personalities - likes and dislikes, behaviourial patterns. They are a huge loss when they go. But Angie is right, the best thing to do is to get another cat, and right now all the animal shelters are full to capacity. Our local RSPCA shelter in North Devon was on the news this week because they have so many cats in their shelter and they can't take any more in. :( Well worth a visit if you're up to it.

Pref rehome two Increased cost is negligible and they love the company when you are not there. My local RSPCA shelter always tries to persuade people to rehome in twos ! Angie

Yes, when my Sol (black cat) died, we went to the Blue Cross to get another cat to keep our little black and white cat company and adopted two brothers, making our total 3! They're gorgeous -- wouldn't be without them! ;-)

Chris - sorry to hear about your cat. I know you will miss her. In my experience (with my budgies) it is best to find a new one to keep you company.

I wish you good memories of her.

I had 2 then, when someone took my dog while over the park with my son, I went looking in rescue centres and ended up with 2 kitten brothers My oldest neutered male cat took them under his wing and on investigating a redness on his belly realised he'd been suckling them There's devotion for you . They all sleep on my bed or elsewhere in the bed room at night . I am fostering a cat for animal accident so thats 5 at the moment but this one stays downstairs usually

( Never got the dog back !!!! Now he was wonderful ) I will get another dog but will wait because my mum wouldn't be able to cope with a pup or a boisterous older dog

it's very well meaning i'm sure when everybody

suggests that you get a new cat,but at the same time,i

think a little tactless.little souls like whoopi are

individual not commodity and you must take time to

grieve for her.i lost my little boy,Mo,only a year

ago,he was only 7 and was struck down with illness.i

was devastated, and the thought of trying to replace

him immediately would just not have been right

you have my heart felt condolences

While you are busy grieving other cats are being put down because the rescue

centres are overloaded . so people need to stop thinking of themselves and

get out and get another cat or two .

I'm thinking of the cat Grief is a luxury which won't help the cat that

has been loved but now gone nor will it help those hoping for a home before

their life ends prematurely because someone is wallowing in grief. How long

is the grief going to last 1 year 5years ? The new cat will actually help

the process It won't replace the loved cat but it will help to accept that

life goes on Memories will still remain and new memories created Angie

i agree with angie here, though i wouldn't accuse the grieving human

companion of wallowing.

my mother [90 next birthday] always looked for a new needy case the

moment one of her cats died [she found it easier than waiting a few

weeks or months]. there were usually always two cats, so it was the

obvious thing to do so that the remaining one would have a companion

[cats grieve too, but this doesn't mean they want to be deprived of

companions of their own species while they do so] but on the last

occasion she didn't because the remaining cat was 20 and didn't take

well to a newcomer.

as a result, when the last cat succumbed to kidney failure earlier this

year aged 21 mother was more than usually bereft and bereaved. by the

next day a sweet middle-aged tortie was all moved in - just in the nick

of time as her people were going abroad that very day and desperate not

to have to put her in a shelter. this doesn't mean mother did not mourn

the old cat - she did, and still does - but she took what i believe was

a brave decision and it has worked well.

the decision was, of course, taken in consultation with me in case the

cat outlives mother - though one never knows... i remember being

refused a cat for her many years ago on the ground that it was

irreponsible to home an animal with an old lady of nearly seventy.

fortunately not everyone was so short sighted and an ill treated young

cat got eighteen happy years with her before pegging out before she did!

so if you can face it, do it - and preferably get two, they do enjoy the

company of their own kind as well as ours.

all best,

vanessa

very good,Angie and I accept what you say,although i

would question the term " wallowing " .When my

And i still stand by my orinal statement...one should

have time to grieve

When one of my dogs died of cancer last February, I grieved. I love

those dogs like children. But when I heard about a puppy who was going

to get drowned, I snapped her up. I adore the new pup - she's 8 1/2

months old now and full of mischief - but I still grieve for my alpha

dog who died. Little Maggie will never replace her, but I love the new

puppy too. I don't think my first dog would mind me getting another

dog. In fact, she would have absolutely loved the pup.

Life goes on for those left behind . We have to make the best of it and help

as many animals as we can.

What breed was your old dog ? Is the puppy a similar breed ?Have fun with

the pup

Tho I'm not ready to have another dog yet, don't think I could anyway as my

situation at work has changed. Since I work full time I used to take my dog

in with me but I've got new bosses and am certain they wouldn't allow it - I

was the only one ever allowed to do so. Last time I had a cat in my house

(local cat just having a look round) it jumped on to the fridge/freezer - if

it went from there to a shelf or anywhere else a lot of stuff would have

gone flying; there are very few clear surfaces in my flat.

One day will get round to having rodents again, I do love a rodent! (have

had spiny mice and gerbils), and I know there are rodent rescue places

around. One day, once I've made the space. Am in the process of sorting,

de-cluttering & chucking but it's a slow process. Specially when I get

distracted by emails!

Cheers
