Guest guest
I'm going to get some heritage hens who are being retired from the university flock late next spring, and I'm all excited about them. Retired hens are perfect - they won't lay many eggs for me to get rid of. I live on 5 acres and have out-buildings and have one all picked out for them, which I'll insulate. I'm thinking of making a sun porch for them, as I live in Canada and the winters are long and dark and cold. I plan to lock 'em up at night (we're inundated by foxes, weasels and coyotes) but they can have the run of th eplace during the daylight hours. I don't plan to have 'em penned up at all. Sorry, just had to brag about my pending companions. Also, I feed a flock of about 100 " wild " pigeons and got a cat a couple of years ago (his mother was moving) and he couldn't believe how big those birds were! He just ignores them completely and they ignore him too. Guest guest
You lucky person Enjoy your hens. A friend of mine( UK)has a hen/turkey sanctuary with about 200+ birds she takes in ex-battery birds that have been rescued Its called Hen Heaven !!!!! It was great to visit them a few months ago. The hens are kept as you have described ,freedom by day -safely locked up at night She sells the free range eggs that are not being sat on ,to the nearest veggie restaurant. It helps with food bills Good Luck Angie " chubbytubbyca " <pnelson Thursday, December 20, 2001 6:31 PM Re: caged birds > I'm going to get some heritage hens who are being retired from the > university flock late next spring, and I'm all excited about them. > Retired hens are perfect - they won't lay many eggs for me to get > rid of. Guest guest
Sounds wonderful! I live in a small flat in London (UK) with half a small garden and no animals apart from the odd slug who wanders in, beetles, spiders and that sort of invertebrate thing. When I retire I'm gonna have a dog again. Maybe I'll be able to by then, having lost my babe about 18 months ago. Gonna go live by the sea and walk on the beach every day... Till then I'll dream.
