FORWARD WIDELY! URGENT! URGENT! URGENT! URGENT! URGENT!

If you respond to one alert all year, this should be it!

UPDATED FOREST CONSERVATION ACTION ALERT!

PAPUA NEW GUINEA:

Call Upon World Bank Board to Maintain Logging Moratorium

TAKE ACTION (updated Dec. 16):

December 16, 2001

By Forests.org, Inc.

The World Bank's Board will be meeting this Tuesday,

December 18th, to discuss the release of the second tranche

of Papua New Guinea's structural adjustment loan and also

giving final consideration to the proposed Forestry and

Conservation Project. The World Bank must be taken to task

for failing to ensure the moratorium is maintained, failing

to end illegal logging in Western Province and elsewhere,

their failure to suspend further loans, and their continued

subsidies and support for commercial forestry (while

ignoring policy requirements to make conservation based

alternatives viable). They must be urged to support the

Inspection Panel claim lodged by impacted landowners.

Now is a crucial moment of opportunity. We must really

mobilize people to Take Action TODAY! The recently updated

email at http://forests.org/emailaction/png.htm

will be sent to all (42) World Bank board members and

alternates, as well as the Bank's President. Please send

the letter of protest even if you sent earlier ones.
