I'm bi, so Lesbian doesn't work. But thank you. I often call myself queer or dyke, but that's not to piss people off (or not *only* to piss people off, anyway. *grin*) It's mostly because the words that exist don't include me. I'm not gay or lesbian. I could write " bi woman " all the time, but dyke is kinda fun in a punky kind of way, so I like it. Plus, my girlfriend is a lesbian, so when talking about both of us, the choices are " Who are those two fat dykes? " or " Who are that fat lesbian and bi woman? " (See serene. See cute-poet-chick. See serene make fun of herself and cute-poet-chick. :-) Just a note: I'm grateful that y'all have welcomed me and allowed for this discussion. I didn't intend to hijack the list with the topic of queerness, but I appreciate being heard. I have found vegans to be some of the most loving and inclusive people in my life, and I think many here confirm that personal observation. serene, who owns a t-shirt that says " I'm not a lesbian, but my girlfriend is. Kinda like being a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I had a friend tell me. To most of the world, she's a fringe radical who doesn't eat their holy meat-and-potatoes, and to the vegans, she's often seen as not vegetarian enough. Sometimes ya can't win. :-) I feel that way sometimes, but certainly any hostility bi people experience from people within the gay community pales in comparison with the sheer volume of homophobia directed at GLBT people worldwide, so one tries not to whine too much. :-) (If my own experience counts, I see it this way: There are issues of heterocentrism and privilege in the straight world and, to a degree, some hostility (mild to severe) towards bi people in the gay community. Personally, I would rather be mistaken for a lesbian than for a straight woman, but others feel differently. I do correct people when they assume, but I don't feel personally offended if someone assumes that (a) I'm straight (after all, most people are) or (b) I'm gay (after all, my current partner and some of my former partners are women). I'm also polyamorous (see http://www.polyamory.org if that's a new term), and I correct people when they reveal to me that they assume I'm monogamous. It's all about visibility to me. If people don't *know* any GLBT or poly people, how will they have any idea that we're not big scary monsters?) > > > serene, who owns a t-shirt that says " I'm not a lesbian, but my > > girlfriend is. Guest guest
We allow anything really as long as it is not a direct offensive attack on someone. We don't take kindly to animal eaters tho' !!!! - " serene " <sandravannoy Friday, January 04, 2002 11:47 PM Re: OT Dyke I> Just a note: I'm grateful that y'all have welcomed me and allowed > for this discussion. Guest guest
Hi Serene > Kinda like being a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I had a friend tell me. To > most of the world, she's a fringe radical who doesn't eat their holy > meat-and-potatoes, and to the vegans, she's often seen as not > vegetarian enough. Sometimes ya can't win. :-) Funnily enough, I find that there's more dislike from ovo-lactos toward vegans - it seems (at least as far as I can see) that vegans tend to think that vegetarians are at least doing something in the right direction, while vegetarians seem to do to vegans what meat eaters do to vegetarians - on the Vegetarian Society list, all you need to do is mention that you're vegan (or even have vegan relatives) and you get all sorts of replies complaining about how righteous vegans are!!! Sorry - it's something that winds me up a bit! BB Peter --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Serene With regard to the word 'queer' - when I was young this word was considered an insult (rather like 'nigger'). Has it always been considered okay by the homosexual/bisexual population, or has it been adopted more recently as being acceptable? Jo > Well, in my case, " Lesbian " is inaccurate. Guest guest
I'm heading out to dinner, but I just wanted to say quickly that: -- Janey, I don't think you're a homophobe. I had a problem with something you said, I told you, you apologized and explained, and now everything is fine. -- I'm not sitting back and laughing at anyone but myself for getting offended too easily. serene
