Hi Lala

Welcome to ! :-)

As far as I know, bread is usually OK - although quite a lot of the " factory

produced " stuff is cooked in trays which are also used for cooking non-vegan

cakes and stuff, so some vegans will avoid those because of " contamination "

worries. I must admit that I am not sure of this - as I have a wheat

allergy, I have to get spelt bread from the local Maison Blanc - and I know

that the stuff I get is vegan! If in doubt, try to get hold of " The Animal

Free Shopper " from the Vegan Society - it tells you which makes of bread

(and just about everything else) are OK!

> And

> also, how often do i need to take b12 supplements?

I'm sure others will give you a better answer than I can, but my

understanding is that the body stores B12 pretty well. Personally, I have a

bowl of kellogs cornflakes with plamil about 4 times a week - this gives me

about 4 times as much B12 than is vitally necessary!

> and honey and sugar are not vegan, right?

Honey is definitely not vegan. Sugar is mostly vegan, but I believe there

are some makes which are processed using animal bits! Someone else help

here, please!

> well

> please help because i don't know any vegans.

You do now! :-)

You mentioned you've only just turned vegan - have you been vegetarian for a

while, or have you gone straight from meat-eating?

A health thing. Some white breads have milk added - check the

ingredients. Generally, white bread is OK.

> And

It depends on the size of the B12 supplement. vegansociety.org has a

good briefing on B12. The bigger, the less often .. but a weekly dose

has to be disproportionately big in order for enough to be absorbed.

> and honey and sugar are not vegan, right? well

Honey isn't vegan because it comes from bees. Although some people at

the edges of veganism eat honey anyway ... it was one of the last things

I dropped.

> please help because i don't know any vegans.

Stick on in there, and think more on the suffering you're refusing to be

part of by avoiding bulk animal products than on getting read of every

last detail.

All IMHO.

I don't take B12 supplements (vegan35 years)

Just eat marmite sometimes Read the labels on the white breab you can eat

white if you prefer it . I often do

Honey is made by bees for bees so it is not vegan

Sugar may be produced using bone charcoal (silver spoon) Tate and Lyle do

experiments on animals to test sucralose an artificial sugar so I won't buy

that Billingtons sugar I think is Ok Not sure cos I don't use sugar

Where do you live Good Luck and well done for going vegan at such a

young age

spelt is a species of wheat which has been around for several hundred years

more popular in europe then in the americas

it apparantly needs slightly less water then regular wheat flour to process,

but, other then that..don't know much about it

emmer wheat is often mistakenly called spelt

Angie / Fraggle

Spelt is an 'original' grain (not modified by breeding or genetics). I have

spelt bread from Maison Blanc - the only baker in the UK to use spelt flour

in all their breads. Colin also makes spelt bread in the breadmaking

machine. It needs less proving time than normal bread flour, but works just

fine if you add a crushed vitamin c tablet.

The reason I have spelt is because I am intolerant of normal flour, as a lot

of people are. Spelt is more easily tolerated.

Hi Angie

Because wheat and spelt are different plants - a bit like someone with an

apple allergy can eat bananas, or someone who's lactose intolerant can drink

soya milk! :-)

Hi Fraggle

" Wheat " covers a variety of different grains - the most " popular " one is

generally called just " wheat " but I'm sure it also has a proper name.

Therefore spelt is a different grain to what is commonly referred to as

wheat!!!
