Does anyone know of any companies that sell vegan friendly shoes in half sizes? I checked out Ethical Wares this morning, but all the shoes I fancied were in whole sizes. My feet are 5 1/2 and this seems to be posing a problem! :(

Thanks!!!

Janey, I haven't checked if these companies provide half sizes, but

they're all vegan, so worth checking out:

Mine veer between 12 and 13, depending on the brand of shoe. Which is a

similar double whammy - vegan *and* odd sized feet.

www.veganshoes.co.uk are really expensive.

I guess you've tried vegetarian-shoes.co.uk?

Hi Ian.

Yes, I took at look at vegan-shoes.co.uk but the styles were a bit old for

me! I checked out vegetarian-shoes, ethicalwares and greenshoes as well.

Either whole sizes or old fashioned shoes. :( I knew this was going to be

a problem!

I think most of them only do stock sizes - none of them wide enough for me. Luckily I haven't run out of the leather (sorry) shoes that I bought years ago, before I decided not to buy anymore. Peter also has wide feet, and had some vegan shoes made - which is what I shall have to do when I need new. Peter will be able to give you details of where he purchased his.

Hi Janey

Green Shoes do a Vegan range - they hand make all shoes to fit, you need to send them a "template" of your foot!

Hi Peter

Yes, I checked out greenshoes because I only live 7 miles from Totnes and I know where the shop is, but on their vegan page there were only about 7 or 8 vegan shoes and I didn't like any of them! I need a pair of shoes for work (firm of solicitors) so I don't want anything too obscure. Just a vegan version of the type of shoes you can get on the High Street. I bought leather shoes when I was a vegetarian and they last for a long time, so its only now that I'm starting to incorporate vegan friendly shoes into my wardrobe. The other vegan shoes are okay, its the ones for work that I'm having trouble with as I try to be smart.

Hi Jo

Yes, this is what I said to Peter. I still wear leather shoes as I bought them before I was a vegan and leather lasts well. I'm keen now to just have vegan friendly shoes but for work I don't want to be parading around in vegan DM's or clogs! The shoes I wear for work right now are quite dainty and fashionable - with the thin strap and buckle. They suit the clothes I wear for work. I guess I could wear insoles if I bought a pair of size 6 shoes, or have them handmade instead, but after checking out the links that Ian gave me, I realise now that some of the shoes are for older people and are a bit flat and frumpy! I'm only 29 afterall!

I do agree - they are even a little 'ordinary'looking for my liking. It's okay when you are wearing casual wear, but awkward for work and best.

I don't have any details but I did hear that Marks & Spencer do a couple of pairs of animal free womens court shoes. It might well be worth asking in your nearest branch.

Good luck

Hi Jo

Thanks for that. I will check out my local M & S then. Like I said, I don't mind these shoes ie. from GreenShoes for every day getting about - but they aren't really suitable to go with the sort of clothes I wear for my firm of solicitors! But the DM's would be cool for the weekends!!! ;-)

Thanks again Jo. I'll let you know!!!

The only thing I can think of if you've tried all the websites previously mentioned is to go to your local cheap shoe shop (such as shoe express) as these are all mostly non-leather - unfortunately I don't know about the glue and such like as I have only ever bought from this sort of shop when I was a vegetarian not vegan. Might be worth asking though.

" Dr " , It is so-called " environmentalists " like you that help to

perpetuate the cycle of cruelty against non-human animals. I am sick

(to the point of wanting to vomit) of " vegans " claiming that they have

the right to use animal skin so long as it is second-hand. Do you not

realize that we have a responsibility to show people by example that

it is entirely possible to live without cruelty?! Your simple comment

that " synthetic shoes are usually shit " is a disgusting display of

cold-heartedness. If you truly cared about ending cruelty, you would

have done your homework and found that there are plenty of

high-quality manufactures of vegan shoes, such as the ones that I

provided links to. By making statements like the one you did, you make

yourself no better than those who say that one needs to eat animals to

be healthy. And EVEN IF synthetic shoes were shit, that does not give

us the right to wear animals - if the only alternative to animals was

shit, then that is what we should be wearing. Fortunately this is not

the reality.

Hi Dr PC

> Cheap synthetic shoes are usually shit...I'd rather wear some second-hand

I tend to disagree with you. I look at it like this - if we buy the 2nd hand

leather shoes, then someone else who would buy those shoes if we hadn't may

be forced to go to buy new shoes - and if they don't have the same ethical

view as ourselves, then they will quite merrily buy new leather shoes.

Thereby, the decision to buy leather shoes is still aiding the industry

which slaughters animals.

And also, aren't all cheap shoes " shit " ?

And since when was leather biodegradable? The tanning process which not only

causes huge amounts of polution is specifically designed to *stop* the

animal hyde biodegarding!

So called enviromentalists?...listen you little dip-shit, the

reasons I abstain from buying meat/leather/eggs/milk etc, is because

by buying them you create the demand. and it is this DEMAND, that

perpetuates the cycle and causes more animals to be mistreated and

butchered.

I know there are places to get better quality shoes, but my response

was to a post suggesting someone goes to a " cheap shoe shop " and buy

something most likely made in a " sweat shop " out of non bidegradable

products and with a life span of about 5 months if your lucky!

I look forward to the day when the entire planet is vegan and

assholes like you suggest we burn or otherwise destroy every

reminent of leather and other animal goods.

I'll gladly fight against your ridiculous, wastefull and total

misguided motives.

split hairs over an issue that you have obviously researched for

Great doctor, you have some knowledge of economics. However, your

vegan planet won't be coming any time soon if vegans only abstain from

animal products without creating demand for high-quality vegan

products. How about some support for your fellow vegans who are trying

to make a real contribution to this world by creating vegan options,

such as shoes? As for preferring to purchase animal skin shoes rather

than sweat shop shoes, that sounds remarkably speciesist to me.

Besides, none of the vegan companies that I know of use sweat shops -

that is the domain of the large companies that likely produced the

used shoes you buy. One of the most effective ways to convert

non-vegans into vegans is through personal interactions - do you

actually think that you can tell a non-vegan to go vegan and at the

same time tell him/her that you haven't been able to wean yourself

from leather shoes. You may try, but now you know why you haven't been

very effective. If you think that using the dead skins of animals is

so acceptable (so long as it doesn't tie directly into the demand for

new leather shoes), I wonder how you'd feel about wearing leather from

the skin of one of your dead relatives or friends in the human

species. I hope that your initial reaction to this proposal isn't a

speciesist one. I think it's time for you to decide which side of the

battle you're on.

As a final note, with regard to your rude statement to Peter about you

not having time to debate an issue that you feel we have not given

thought to, I suggest that you either decide to participate in this

listserve or not. You cannot have it both ways - if you feel that the

interactions between the people on this listserve are valuable, feel

free to engage in discussion, but you cannot simply blurt out your

thoughts without being accountable and prepared to engage in

discussion about them.

Best

Adam (or as you like to call me, " little dip-shit " or " asshole " )

P.S. Please reserve your vulgar name calling for your kindergarten

class.

P.P.S. Please start using your real name, rather than hiding behind

your " Dr. P.C. Talking " alias.

You have made a fair point there PC! It was me who was enquiring about

buying vegan friendly shoes and whilst I don't want to purchase leather

shoes, I also have to consider other environmental issues. You are

completely right about this!!!

I've contacted Ethical Wares and they were extremely helpful. I will now be

purchasing my shoes through them, but I'd like to thank everyone for the

helpful tips they gave me. ;-)
