Hi There,

My name is Laura Wilson and I have been a vegetarian

for years up until recently when I became pregnant, I

started eating chicken and other mainstream food. Now

that I have had my child, I really want to get back

into the swing of things although it seems difficult

to be completely vegan being surrounded by all

non-vegetarians... Is there anything I can do to get

off to the right start?

Hi Laura

Are you in the UK? If so the Vegan Shopper is a very handy book to have.

Also (if you ever get a spare minute) maybe you could gather together 10-20

stragihtforward quick recipes, so that you can always cook a vegan meal. If

I was young and pregnant, or had a new baby now, I would find out about

bringing them up as vegan from the start. I believe the Vegan Society can

give you information on this.

Good luck.

Hello Laura, I became vegan about a year or so before our first

child was born. My wife and I had both been veggie about 4-5 years

previous to that. We didn't know any vegans at all, but I was urged

on after picking up a second hand copy of animal free shopper in a

charity shop. My wife was put off being vegan during pregnancy by

biased health propaganda!!

By the time our first child was born my wife was converted and ready

to take the plunge. I'd almost perfected cooking without cheese and

eggs (which figured hightly on our veggie diet), and we all lived

happily ever after!!...Our son is now almost three years old, a life

vegan, and very happy, healthy and intellegent for it.

Our second child was born about 15 weeks ago, and is having her

first happy solid vegan meals and enjoying them very much already.

One thing I did find difficult though was substitute cheeses etc...I

tried them when I first went vegan, but just couldn't get into them,

or how to cook with them...so I never touched them for about a year

or so...same with vegan mayo...Now however I'm well into them...and

can make perfect cheese sauses, pizzas, lasagne etc...

Good luck, and if you need any simple " common " recipes/alternatives

give me a shout...also, ignore any vegans who jump down your throat

because you ain't perfect. And as for those around you??...you have

to be strong enough in yourself and what you are doing to tell them

where to go. The animal free shopper as peter says gives a great

introduction to the ethics of veganism, as well as telling you what

products ore ok to buy....but it's very much trial and error at the

start...it shouldn't be long before the smell or thought of milk

makes you puke!!

Hi Laura,

When I became a vegetarian I didn't know any other vegetarians (well apart

from those who *called* themselves vegetarians but conveniently ate fish -

lol!!!). Then I married a meat eater. A couple of years later I became a

vegan. I definitely didn't know any vegans. But in my heart I knew it was

right for me and I wouldn't have cared if I was the only vegan on the

planet. I knew I could no longer be part of animal suffering and cruelty

and that was that!!! Are you becoming a vegan because of animal reasons or

health reasons? I hope you don't mind me asking you this, but I'm never

quite sure why vegetarians and/or vegans revert to eating meat. If you have

become a vegan because of animal reasons then I would have thought sticking

to a vegan diet would be extremely easy! Just think of the cruelty that

goes on and if you are finding it hard sticking to veganism, then read a

book on factory farming or check out a website with photos. That'll soon

get you motivated and keep you on the right track. We all need a stark

reminder once in a while! If you have become a vegan because of health

reasons then I can't really help you. For me my veganism is about not being

associated with animal cruelty. I've dabbled a bit with rawfoodism but that

was only after I became a vegan.

Take care.
