i just wrote all this but something happened and i don't know if it

sent so if it did then sorry for repeating it all, i just really want

some advice. but i'll keep it shorter this time.

so i'm 16 and in one of the senior classes. i am also president of

the 11th grade classes. it's my duty as president to work with the

12th grade president and vice president to put on this BBQ which will

earn money for our school, i've only been at this school a few months

and wasn't aware i would have to do this. i haven't attended a bbq

since i was like 12 and i've been vegan for a pretty short amount of

time. i'm vegan because i don't want to exploit animals which would

be exactly what i would be doing if i planned this event. when i

declined to help plan the event i was told that it is one of my

duties, and it is a rule that they can vote me out since any member

who it is felt is not participating or is not taking their role

seriously can be voted out. since they're all annoyed with me i'm

sure that's going to happen but DON'T WORRY, my dignity is SO much

more important to me then stupid student senate. so here are my

options:

1. get voted off (a given if i don't help plan)

2. resign and make a big speech (not like anyone would make a big

deal about it but at least i'll have had my say)

3. they offered to let me plan the games. (but i'm thinking that

that would just encourage people to come, and then they'd get hungry

and eat the meat so i'm not a big fan of this option.)

4. i could make my speech BEFORE they vote and maybe they would just

let me stay out this once. i'm not very good at writing really

powerful speeches so if you like this option and have any ideas then

maybe you could, you know....help me out a little.

you're probably thinking, " why would you even want to be part of this

if they can't even respect your decision to try get animals to be

treated with some respect? " well the thing is that to get into

college i will need a student loan and being in student senate will

majorly help, so i'd like to try and stay on. don't fret about it or

anything, i know it's my battle. it just feels kinda lonely when

you're the only vegan you know and i don't like to annoy people or

have people mad at me, but it's just too important for me. I CAN'T

EVEN BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING, WHAT A DUMB REASON TO BE VOTED

OFF!!!!!

Laura...hmmmmmmm....

All I can say is follow your heart. I totally understand the need for student loans & scholarships & how much they rely on extra-curriculars...

But...you have to do what you feel is right. Maybe suggesting a vegan "table" at the BBQ. Your class can promote it. I am sure you are not the only vegan/vegetarian in your school.

Maybe make a little flyer or something that can be put in your school paper explaining what vegan is and why it is important...

I don't know about anyone else, but the last thing I want after exercise is meat...maybe other people will realize that they don't need all that junk after they play the "games".

I don't know. I am a crusader. I am the first one to paint a picket sign or build & pull the bandwagon, so maybe I am not the best person to be giving you advice...if it were me...I would tell them to go jump off a cow and do what you think is right...

Hi, Laura,

Here's an idea: How about helping to plan the barbeque, then

using it as an opportunity to distribute some vegan literature?

The people that are going to eat meat at that barbeque would eat

meat whether or not it was held, and it will be held no matter who

plans it. But if what you really want is for others to eat less meat,

then if you help to open the eyes of one meat eater, you have

accomplished something.

Another thing to do would be to make sure there are

vegetarian choices in addition to the meat being served at the

barbeque, so that anyone attending for social reasons but not

wanting to eat meat will have another option, and maybe less

meat will be eaten overall.

Sometimes I think that by carrying my ideals into a situation

rather than trying to oppose the situation altogether, I can be

more effective in helping to spread the word about my ideals. I

think that many meat eaters don't understand vegetarianism and

veganism and would benefit from a chance to just talk to one of

us. Letting people know you are vegan might be a way of

making yourself available to any of your classmates who have

considered giving veganism or vegetarianism a try but who have

been afraid to " take the plunge. "

Take what you like (of what I've shared) and leave the rest.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Say you will only help if they will just this one year accept having an all vegan, or if you are prepared to compromise, all vegetarian barbecue. Everyone can eat vegan food after all so they can hardly object to this idea, they can eat animals at other times, it's only this one time you ask them to respect your ways.

If they won't agree, make a big stink in the local press that you are being pushed into going against your conscience, and that you are being discriminated against for your beliefs, because that is what is happening if you lose your loan for your beliefs.

If you make a speech, compare the exploitation of animals to slavery or racism or homophobia or something you think most of them will understand as being wrong. That should help get it across to them. Ask how they would feel if they were asked to take part in the killing of people, you feel the same about being expected to take part as an accessory to the killing of animals. I can't see why they can't understand that..

Good luck.

Hi Laura,

>it's my duty as president to work with the

>12th grade president and vice president to put on

>this BBQ which will earn money for our school,

gosh, if its your duty to help plan the event, then

you're in the ideal position to get some vegan options

on there - bbq's don't have to be meat only -

In my experience a lot of meat eaters will always try

the vegetarian/vegan option just to see what its like,

and some vegan burgers and sausages look positively

meat like and I'm sure meat eaters could be deceived

if they weren't told the difference - But certainly

you should setup a vegan bbq and then people can have

the choice ..

>i'm vegan because i don't want to exploit animals

>which would be exactly what i would be doing if i

>planned this event.

quite the opposite I should say - use your influence

as president to get vegan options out there, and

therefore you will be cutting down the amount of meat

brought in. Also do you have to source other

foodstuffs other than meat? if so, try and go for

environmentally/ethically aware companies.

is coleslaw a bbq must-have? if so try and get some

which uses vegan mayonnaise or if thats impossible at

least one with mayonnaise made with free-range eggs -

it all makes a difference -

anyway good luck and be positive

Laura,

First off, welcome to the list. Secondly....I applaud your standing

your ground. Here's my advice: if you feel that planning this event

is morally wrong(I would share this view if I were in your

shoes),then don't participate. If they threaten to kick you off

senate for your points of view...well,I would think you may even have

a lawsuit pending. Go to the school administration..if they provide

further trouble, take it to the schoolboard.Looks like a case od

discrimination if you ask me. Kind of like how noone can force you to

participate in a dissection in biology class in relation to your

moral outlook,its the same thing,at least I'd think so. Now,what I

owuld do is be as vocal about it as possible, make the speech. If they

do kick you off, like you said it's simply student senate, nothing

horribly important compared to your beliefs. Now,you did express

concern about its appearance on your college applications and

whatnot. I have a possible solution for you there. You can put down

that you were involved in senate, because up til now at least, you were.

However, many colleges require some sort of essay to accompany the

application, most of which deal with some sort of experience you've

had. You could maybe write of your involvement with senate and

falling out over an issue that is important to you. Would show good

character on your part, and would likely be looked upon favorably by

the person(s) reviewing your application.

> 4. i could make my speech BEFORE they vote and maybe they would

just > let me stay out this once.

That sounds like your best option. If you're gonna go down,go down

fighting. You have my respect, don't ever give in,don't ever

compromise or sell out your beliefs for anyone or anything. Do what

you feel is right. Thats the only thing you can do in life. I commend

you for " fighting the good fight " ...good luck, and please let me know

how things go. I've got your back all the way.
