Guest guest
That's a depressingly common attitude. Sometimes, I feel as if people feel it's socially acceptable to be rude to vegans in a way it isn't towards anyone else. My sister's boyfriend was at a family gathering yesterday, and he described his leather-bound diary as " half a dead cow " . No-one batted an eyelid - and my other sister is a veggie of convienience. (Who cooked a vegan pasta with some cheese on the side for everyone else.) To be fair, I don't think that soya milk tastes quite as nice as cow's milk, and it takes getting used to. (I alternated between the two as an allergy-ridden teen, so I can compare.) Woman's Own did some tests, and only Plamil's brand came out evens with cow juice. (Plus, they're a 100% vegan company.) Of course, my guests who'd rather have tea black than with the soya milk they've already tried are quite different to the apallingly rude and apallingly closed-minded of Peter and Janey's acquaintance. And my sister's boyfriend. Janey wrote: > > Why? I fail to understand people sometimes. Why couldn't they eat your > cake?????? > > I keep my soya milk in the fridge at work. ISTR others who commented they liked soya milk when we shared a kitchen at work, but, alas, they weren't vegan . We even had a failed attempt to get FT.com to stock soya milk as well as cows milk in the kitchen fridge. -- Ian McDonald http://www.mcdonald.me.uk/
Guest guest
Must be down to personal taste. I used to love cow's milk, hated soya milk when I first tried it but after about 6 milkless months tried it again and it was okay. Only okay though (and could have been a different brand though since I was in a less than 1 horse town I doubt it). Now I love the stuff, but only the sweetened version, and can drink it on its own. Actually, bout time I had a gnight coffee so bye all... Guest guest
After a decade or so of veganism, I will have to agree with the flesh- eaters opinion of a lot of Vegan food...I have eaten some truely nasty shit in my day. When I started GreenMan Cafe I did not go to Vegans or Vegetarians, I found a meat-eating exec chef (he won't eat vegetables because of a reacuring childhood nightmare) who could remember what a Creme Brulee was suppose to taste like. When we make Pumkin pie I will seriously hurt a cook who suggests Tofu, we boil the pumkin down and make the damn thing right. You will not find Soy milk in my restaurant, it tastes like chalk and I am too much of a coffee whore to froth a Vegan hot chocolate mochas that taste like chalk(ride the steam spigot at the bottom longer and do minimal froth). 90% of my kitchen staff in January ate meat, most will never use eggs for baking again and will dispise the day they have to go somewhere to cook flesh again. Guest guest
When I ate animals I ate nasty " shit " also . Its not the preserve of vegans When I became vegan soya milk did not exist so I had to have coffee tea/ black and gave up coffee . I then began to have them again with soya milk which I like when i have cereals I've since given up tea/coffee at home as I prefer fruit teas.. I also eat Raw till tea time as I prefer the taste of the raw vegetables. So no cooking has impressed me that much. When I cook its either pasta ,rice or potato mainly to fill me up or bread If I eat out its to support the vegan /veggie restaurant , not cos I particularly fancy their food . Give me a raw red pepper and black grapes any day !!!!! - " veganliberation " <veganlib Wednesday, February 27, 2002 5:32 AM Re: Reactions to vegan food ... > After a decade or so of veganism, I will have to agree with the flesh- > eaters opinion of a lot of Vegan food...I have eaten some truely > nasty shit in my day. Guest guest
If Plamil came equal in taste with cow secretion, then surely Provamel must have come out as tastier? Although Plamil are a most ethical vegan company, Provamel does taste nicer. I'm not the only vegan who feels this way. We also like Plamil chocolate but sorry to say not the milk very often. Guest guest
At least he was being honest about what leather was. Sounds like he was trying to be wind you up, did you challenge him? At least it gave you the opportunity to respond that he was a barbaric killer if you wanted to, since he brought up the issue. I'd avoid people like him, and make sure he knew why he was being avoided, family or not! I agree that it does seem socially accepted that rudeness towards vegans is OK compared to rudeness to other minorities, this is irritating, and I always challenge it if anyone is rude about me being vegan. I don't go about going out of my way to be rude to meat-eaters, but if they are rude to me about veganism, then they get some rudeness back. We drank goats milk a lot when I was a child (my mother kept a goat), that was quite yucky stuff. I can't remember what cows milk tastes like, but I don't think I remember it being as nice as Provamel. Personally, I find it depends on the use. I don't like the taste of Plamil as a glass of milk, but I love the taste on cornflakes / muesli / porridge etc. BB Peter --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
Hi Janey, I am not discouraging you from drinking soy milk. It is by far better than cow milk. It is just that I personally can't drink it because it contains too much salt. On notmilk.com, the guy talks about a machine that makes soy milk from the soy beans. If I had the funds, I would buy this machine and make my own salt-free soy milk ... yum. In Health ... Werner. - Janey Wednesday, February 27, 2002 11:45 AM Re: Reactions to vegan food ...
