I no longer buy or wear any leather. I do have an old pair of docs,

but they are worn out anyway, so I am not wasting them. I always try

and buy non-leather shoes and accessories.

Well, I'm a clothing designer and I keep everything! I have an obscene amount of clothing because I collect clothing and hold onto it for design/inspirational purposes. I even have some vintage things with fur. As far as wearing the stuff, I do have an old black leather belt that just always seems to go with an outfit whenever I need a belt. Aside from that, the leather/fur stuff is strictly for observational purposes only, though. And the clothes I design are *always* vegan. I get really nice unbleached organic cotton and dye it by hand with vegan, low impact dye. I'm trying to get my hands on some fabric made out of recycled bits, but I'm so little, I usually can't afford the minimums :( You have to buy A LOT of the stuff or they won't even sell it to you. Fascists.

Hey! I have a question for everyone here: would you buy a t-shirt made from recycled t-shirts or would you think that was icky? I have an idea to buy a bundle of pre-cleaned, previously owned t-shirts and make new t-shirts out them -- like cut em' apart and piece them back together with pieces inside out and mismatched and stuff? It would look really cool, but I don't know if people would buy them... would you?

Hey Casey!

Yeah, baby t's and musle t's and tank tops and all that good stuff! I think it would be cool, but I've never had a problem with wearing other people's old clothes. I've talked about this idea with people that I know and they kind've scrunched up their faces and said things like, "would they be clean, though?" so now I'm not so sure how good of an idea it is. But they would *definitely* be clean because not only would I buy them already cleaned, but I would wash them again with eco-friendly detergent before cutting them.

The funny thing is, you have so much more to worry about when you buy new clothes as opposed to old because of all of the chemicals they apply to fabric to "finish" it. Oh well.

I probably will be making just girly stuff. I want to do stuff for guys, too, but guys are *so* much pickier than girls are -- LOL!

Good luck with your major! I went to an art school and it can be very tough despite what people think. Just remember to look into all of the aid that is available to you when you graduate. There are loads of fellowships and grants for artists out there -- you just have to look. You can definitely make good money (or at least satisfactory money) in art, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise if you're nervous about that. What kind of stuff do you paint?

They have these companies that sell the stuff in bundles. You can pick the general quality and color of the bundles and you can pick what you want (jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) I have a whole list of them (I think they are called "jobbers") if anyone else is interested. You can also get stuff called "dead stock" which is original vintage clothing that was never sold. That's a bit harder to find and more expensive -- it's neat, tho' because it still has the original tags on it (and some of them are pretty funny!)

My friends and I *always* went thrift-shopping so it's perfectly normal and fine to me. But thinking back, we got teased a lot, too :)

Thanks for your input!

Hey! Remember when the toy-dispensing vending machines had the little

mini-capsules for $.10? !

I'm 27. I have no idea how many fraggle years that is.

But older men are " sexy. " Older women need plastic surgery.

Soooo maybe Fraggle just needs a hot, little 19 yo femme fraggle to perk him

up ;)? And I'll start saving up for that face lift...

LOL.

RE: Re: leather

>>you obviously have never seen the way i dress!!!heck..sometimes i have more holes then clothes....<<

LOL! What I meant by pickier was that guys have a harder time trying out new styles than women. Women are more likely to take risks with clothes and so it's easier to find women to buy your stuff if it's a little different. It's harder to guess what guys will go for...

>>is there anyway to remove the chemicals safely?<<

The best that you can do is wash it before you wear it. And try not to buy too much stuff that needs to be dry-cleaned. Dry-cleaning stuff is horrible for you and horrible for the environment. If you have to dry clean anything you should remove it from the drycleaners plastic and leave it outside to air out before you wear it. Most new things that have textiles on them (rugs, furniture, clothing, etc.) are treated with extremely harsh chemicals and it's recommended that you air them out before bringing them into your home. Scary, hunh?

It would look really cool, but I don't know if people would buy them... would you?

If I liked the design (and could afford them) then yes I'd buy them. But then I am a great lover of charity shops and the such so it definately doesn't sound 'icky'.

Personally I think they sound like they're going to be way cool.

Hey, Casey! There are loads of things you can do with art for charities and PLUS doing good stuff like getting involved in charities is a good way to network. Ewww...there I go again, using grown-up, icky words like "network" Blenh. I'm going to go and wash my mouth out with some Dr. Bronner's soap, now...

Anyway, yes, thrift stores ROCK. My most coveted garments have all been thrift store finds. My little, super micro-mini mod dress, my yellow felt jacket with hardware on it that looks like it came from another planet (and maybe it did,) my little punk rock girl plaid skirt, etc... I like the 60's best, I think. I like the minis 'coz I'm little and they make me look tall. Well, the obscenely platformed shoes, help, too ;)

Wow! 5'10 " for a girl is awesome! You should model ;-D I love how people

do that: girl + tall = model. I'm 5'2 " . And I weigh less than most

American children over the age of 10. At least it seems that way. Bad, bad

American diets...

Clothes are fun! I always found it interesting how what you wear affects

how people treat you/see you and how you feel about yourself. The way that

you dress is far more conscious than most people realize. It's like armor!

If you woke up one day and someone had replaced all of your clothes and you

had no choice but to wear them, you would walk around all day feeling very

vulnerable and insecure.

Which reminds me... I need a new pair of platforms...

Yep, I know. I was talking about the minis. They were sixties -- Mary Quant.

Who says you have to stay within one period? LOL!

Yay! Thanks Shelloid! I will try and keep the prices down on these as the fabric will be cheap and the designs simple...

Re: leather

It would look really cool, but I don't know if people would buy them... would you?

If I liked the design (and could afford them) then yes I'd buy them. But then I am a great lover of charity shops and the such so it definately doesn't sound 'icky'.

Personally I think they sound like they're going to be way cool.
