Did anyone else see Uri Geller on Ready Steady Cook just now? He was a very

good advert for veg-ism.

No - the TV is still out of action :\

Is he vegetarian or vegan?

Hi Jo

No, I didn't see the programme. Is Uri Geller a vegetarian???

I saw the programme last year with Anthea Turner (meat eater) and her sister

Wendy Turner Webster (vegan). The chef groaned when Wendy said she was a

vegan, but in fact she won! I thought she was a terrific advert for

veganism on primetime tv.

Yes the chef grimaced when Uri Geller said he was veggie. Uri said that it

was healthy and that he didn't want any animals to die to nourish him. He

explained why he had bought the items, and what nutrition there was in them.

The other person (the girl who does Robot Wars) won by a small margin. She

was using organic food. Obviously I preferred Uri's meal, but the other

meal looked very good apart from the salmon.

I'm not sure - the food he brought with him was vegan.

I read a famous veggie list somewhere recently that said Uri Geller was " no

longer vegan " , although how up to date that was I don't know (I can't even

remember the source) and he could have changed back since.

I feel like I'm talking to myself, but anyway...

Interview with Uri Geller about being vegan for 28 years:

http://www.animal-lib.org.au/interviews/uri/

Source of " Please note that Uri Geller is no longer vegan " comment:

http://www.vegansociety.com/html/info/info49.html "

I would be inclined to ignore that comment as I can't see it mentioned

anyway else, but the source should be reliable.

The animal-lib interview was interesting - I hardly knew anything

about Uri other than his psychic abilities. I think I'd read that page

on the Vegan Soc's web site before, but had forgotten about it.

That does seem odd, but it's probably not something he would want to

publicise if it were true, given that he widely promoted veganism

(going by the animal-lib interview).

Why?

I though I'd heard he was vegan, but I tend to forget this sort of thing

after a while!!! Everything he had on Ready Steady Cook was vegan (which

could, of course, just be co-incidence, but how many non-vegan vegetarians

know what a meal without dairy products is??)

A few years ago after supporting the Vegan Society, he did use yogurt in a recipe on Ready Steady Cook, so he was in a bit of trouble with them over that, but no doubt he is still vegetarian. Who knows maybe he is vegan again, but he did have a lapse certainly.

This is an indication that Uri is no longer vegan:

http://www.adalarms.force9.co.uk/cybershop/shirts.htm

" 100 percent silk shirts owned and actually worn by Uri Geller with

proceeds going to save the children. "

I doubt he would wear or endorse silk if he was still vegan.

Right, I *will* do some work - that's enough 'web research' for now :)

Just because I answered the same question twice with different answers.

Cheese is the new meat, didn't you know? 8-)

I'm not sure why the Vegan Soc claims as an aside that he is no longer

vegan, I haven't seen it claimed anywhere else, so maybe he is still a

dietary vegan but not in some other area? I think unless anyone knows

anymore I would still consider him a vegan, but regardless of that he still

made a good advertisement for veganism on TV.

He certainly was a great advert for veg*anism on Ready Steady Cook! He had

the knack of explaining very quickly why he was vegetarian, the advantages

etc. without sounding like he was preaching.
