Guest guest
I realized after my last couple of posts, I may be branded as a " troublemaker " because I do feel justified in eating meat. Just to let you guys know, I do respect your views deeply. Like I have stated earlier, I actually came here simply to give the cigarette warning. You guys just had a current topic of discussion I found to be profoundly interesting from a philosophical perspective, and couldn't resist putting my two cents in. If either the owner of this group, or the majority of the members find my input unwelcome, I will leave with absolutely no hard feelings. If any of you wish to debate anything I have said, I welcome it fully so long as the tone of your argument is as respectful as I try to be. I hope you guys do let me hang out though, if for no other reason than so I can eavesdrop while you exchange recipes. They would be quite valuable to me for three reasons. While I have no real ethical objections to humans eating meat, it is expensive to obtain meat that lived under what I consider ethical conditions. Therefore it is logical for me to eat less of it. Also, it would be nice to be able to invite my vegan friends to dinner once in awhile, and I can't do that until I know what I can safely cook. Of course, the last reason I'm sure you will all agree with me on, despite popular opinion, a lot of vegan food is just plain tasty.

As a general comment to the rest of the list, if others are uncomfortable with having meat-eaters on list, let me know (although, unless people state they eat meat, I'm not sure how to tell over e-mail ;-)), but speaking without my moderator's hat on, I am happy to discuss vegan issues with anyone - the one list rule is to always keep polite. And obviously, as the list is specifically vegan, non-vegans on here will often have to put up with certain views they don't necessarily agree with!! Guest guest
I find it unlikely I will be offended by your views. Like I said, I do have a deep respect for most vegan ideology, even in the cases where I disagree. I have always enjoyed being exposed to ideas different than my own. I even welcome when one finds a flaw in my logic that I cannot construct a valid argument against. It is the greatest vaccine against intellectual stagnancy. I usually only get offended if it turns from a debate to a personal attack. As this is against the rules of this board, I doubt it will be an issue. Since this is a vegan board, however, I shall make an effort to stay on topic. Like I stated, even though I do believe it as morally acceptable for humans to eat meat, I wish to vastly reduce the amount in my diet. So if any of you can offer vegetarian or vegan recipe ideas, I do appreciate it. I specifically would like to know if anyone has recipes for vegan versions of the following: chocolate-cheesecake, manacotti, baba ganouche, naan, and rissoto. I have had delicious non-dairy versions of all of them, but failed to obtain the recipes.

I can understand people stating that they eat meat because they like it, but 'morally acceptable'...... just an excuse to do something you want and make it seem okay, to my mind. Guest guest
Jezebel - I don't mind having a meat eater on here, "in fact some of my best friends are (*_________ fill in the blank*)" meat eaters (I've heard that obnoxiously stupid line used so much when people talk about racial, religious, or minority groups - I just had to use it - - hahahaha!!!) I agree with what Peter said though - be prepared for debates considering the topic of this group. Pam

You are on a vegan list saying it's OK to eat what sort of meat? From animals that died of old age? If it is meat from animals you hunted and killed yourself or from factory farming how can you justify it being morally acceptable? I am not sure in my mind that a vegan list has a place for someone who only wants to REDUCE the amount of meat they eat. ????? If vegans associated only with themselves, how would that bring about any meaningful change in the wider society? Granted, I'm new to this list and not very familiar with its rules, but I believe that allowing various perspectives, assuming they're presented respectfully, can only enrich this group.
