Hi Peter,

yes ... I've heard all the arguments pro and con about honey. But I always thought a bee was an insect, rather than an animal? I've even heard honey being labeled as bee spit or vomit ....

To me, it is just a concentrated carbohydrate.

Werner.

Or have they changed the way that's produced recently?

Werner - what is an insect if not an animal? It is not a plant. It does have a face, stomach, reproductive organs, respiratory system - much the same as other animals. Some people consider that fish are okay for veggies to eat. They seem to think they are not animals!

What's with this *animal* word? Do you eat birds and fish then? Bees are living creatures and they are exploited for their honey. Vegans don't eat honey!

P.S. I did try to snip this e-mail before sending it, but Werner's e-mail package won't allow me to do this. Another reason Werner why you might consider not using it!

No, he doesn't get to decide what behavior is vegan, that comes from the

society of language users and they consider honey not vegan.

He can eat honey or be a vegan, not both. And as this is a vegan list I

think everyone has the right to be bitter.

That's true Michael. I don't think anyone (this is not directed at Werner!)

can claim to be vegan *but* eat meat/dairy/honey etc. There are always

people who make exceptions but still call themselves vegan. Like I said

earlier, I get equally annoyed when people claim to be vegetarian but eat

fish or *a little chicken*. I saw Gaby Roslin on *Celebrity Ready Steady

Cook* once and she said she was a vegetarian. I became interested in the

programme until she then said she ate fish!!!!!! I could have screamed!

She said that on national tv so probably anyone who didn't eat meat but just

ate fish (as a lot of people do as a preference), must have thought *hey, I

must be vegetarian too*! You can't compromise. Either you are a vegan or

not. There's no room for *buts*. If you eat living creatures, then you're

not!

Hi Werner, well in your above post you said you were both vegan and eat honey. You actually said you were *vegan* (!!!) but now you're saying you're not???! And as well as saying you're a vegan, you also post on a vegan list, so it would be natural for us to assume therefore, that eating honey is not in accordance with your *vegan* diet! We're only answering on the information you gave us.

Exactly! You can't distinguish between living creatures. Some people bragg

to me that they *only eat chicken*. And I think *so what*?! Why is it okay

to eat chicken, but not pigs or poultry??? Why do chickens deserve to die?!

The same thing is happening here - Werner thinks its okay to eat bee vomit,

so why doesn't he drink cow's milk or eat chicken's eggs? I just don't see

the difference.

To produce honey the queen bee has her wings clipped so she cannot fly off and make a hive somewhere else. The nutrient rich baby food (honey) is then stolen and nutrient free sugar water is substituted for the babies to eat. I don't think this is a fair thing to do to an animal. I also think that it is responsible for the escalating death toll of bees. How can they survive if they are constantly under nourished.

Hey! I actually *didn't* know the queens wings were clipped. I am so impressed, Jo. I usually have more bug-related knowledge in my noggin than any non-entomologist-type-human needs to know... And once again, Jo (I really need to start reading all the posts before I start spouting off) I apologize for being a copy cat.

I think he shouldn't call himself vegan if he eats honey because if he does

restaurants will expect to be able to include honey in vegan meals. Then

when a real vegan goes along for a meal he might end up being given a meal

containing honey.
