The common cicadas have to be well over 2 " so i guess it's all relative. I've never seen a " tiny " one. They must be cuties. > and the one from thailand looks like a lunar moth I totally thought so, too and I almost said something to that effect. At first glance, it looks like a butterfly or something. Amazing. We used to get these insects in MD that looked like hummingbirds. Infact, my fiance and I argued one evening over what it was (of course I was right -- it was an insect.) And we had these moths -- I think they are called clear wings? -- that mimic the look and flight of a bee. The best, though, are those bugs that look like bird droppings. Guest guest
I've kind of been following your bug conversation in my brief moments of freedom from my books. These cicadas that you were discussing hit us really bad several years back. These bugs come out every 17 years like you said but we were in a zone in the southewestern corner of PA that connected into three different zones of cicadas so we were bombed by them. They were everywhere - you couldn't walk a foot without stepping on one - they were about 2 inches long and their wings went about another 1/2 inch past their bodies and they were very very loud. For about a month we would walk outside and it sounded like something out of the twilight zone - the flying saucer buzzing over head all the time it was erie as hell - then they started shedding and getting ready to go into their next egg laying stage and there were chunks of giant shedded cicada skins everywhere and they would bonking all over the place. They also jumped and flew and when they hit you it was worse than when I lived in Florida and the big giant palmetto bugs would hit you. It was nasty too because everytime I let the dogs out one of them would run around and eat them like they were giant M & M's - they crunched really loud. UGH!!!! I would have been in *heaven* (yes, there *is* something wrong with me) It would have been a scene like out of that kick-ass Matthew Sweet video; Jojo lying on the grass with cicadas crawling all over her dress. Wheee! - then they started shedding and getting ready to go into their next egg laying stage and there were chunks of giant shedded cicada skins everywhere and they would bonking all over the place. Actually, they only shed once above ground and it's when they emerge. They come out all white, like they are albino or something, and then they stretch out their wings and test em out. They die right after mating. That's probably a good way to go, actually. I saw these ladybugs once going at it and I *swear* they were enjoying themselves. I started to feel kind of dirty watching them so I had to leave them alone...LOL! They also jumped and flew and when they hit you it was worse than when I lived in Florida and the big giant palmetto bugs would hit you. Well let that be the worst thing your dogs eat. One of my mom's pugs can scope out and lap up a fresh poo in the yard faster than you can snap your fingers -- it's gone! Blenh. I was only in Florida once and I totally missed out on the Palmetto bug experience -- they are cucarachas, no? Big flying ones? Guest guest
My dog can spot fresh poop a mile away - I had to put the litterbox downstairs with a kiddie gate blocking the steps so the cats could go under but she couldn't go down - no more tootsie rolls for that dog. They claim the palmetto bugs actually aren't a cockroach but to see them you would never know - they look about the same but are real big and fly. -- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . Guest guest
yeah, they are big roaches..... i got chased by them when i was like 7 er 8 outside a motel room in florida...opened up the trash can to throw something away(some sort of sugary soda no doubt)(hey, this was in the 70's, no recycling yet, heck, the can was probably pulled steel instead of aluminum) and these HUGE flying things buzzed up at me.....screamed like a lil fraggle and hitched my shorts and ran terrified back to the room my father didn't believe me.... *sniff* years later, saw em again, ans was thoroughly not impressed, i was lookin fer the fangs and giant claws, big sharp pointy teeth, fire spoutiingfrom glistening beaks, and the 3 heads i had remembered...... fraggle > Ewww.... LOL -- my family calls cat poo "tootsie rolls," too :-D! Blenh! They claim the palmetto bugs actually aren't a cockroach but to see them you would never know - they look about the same but are real big and fly. Hmmm..... Are they pretty much wild or do they tend to dwell in urban settings? I could see being bothered by them if they were in my apartment breeding, but I think it would be neat to see them flying around outside. I heard that Fla gets some really pretty exotic -- almost tropical -- beetles. I want to go somewhere tropical just to look at the beetles. Big, shiny, metallic, herbivores (well, most beetles are herbivorous anyway...) I think I've seen some stag beetles and rhinoceros (sp?) beetles, on the east coast, but they are tiny in comparison with their tropical cousins. --jojo www.tofu2go.com
