We interrupt this somewhat hair-raising discussion about cats and

meaties to bring you a plea for help from the newbie vegans.....

Help!!!

<Cynthia is lying down with cold cloth on forehead, eyeing her cat

with newfound fear and trepidation...>

1. Yes, I know you've told me this 5000 times, but is there a list

for vegans that says which adult beverages are vegan, for those of us

who still want to use these substances, please excuse me if I am

going to die and go to hell for this.....

2. I cannot cook. Nopenopenopenopenope. I can make anything in the

kitchen look and have the consistency of saliva. Can someone give me

the brand names of some vegan fast food items? I thought I had it

the other day when I had Boca's Bratwurst - but I found " egg whites "

in the ingredients after I finally found enough light to get my

bifocals adjusted. If I can nuke it, it's a winner.

3. Chocolate. I must have chocolate. Yes, I know it has milk in

it. Brand suggestions, anyone?

On the plus side, I want to let you all know - I went vegan recently

because I have serious bowel disease that causes serious bowel

obstructions which is more than anyone wanted to know about " moi " .

And guess what? I do NOT have to take the 3 times a week laxative I

had to take anymore. Fruits, vegetables, grains and soy keep

everything, errrr, functioning like a top. Which is WAY more than

anyone wanted to know so I will just have to go back to lying down

and imagining Michael naked. Oh, drat, I said the word " naked " .

Cynthia...

Don't panic! As far as no-cook vegan, I'm about the same. I found the best vegan taco filling --- it's made by fantastic foods (they have a website, www.fantasticfoods.com) and I bought it at the local Kroger, so it must be easy to find. It's a boil-and-stir kind of thing, you can't ruin it. That, some beans, and some tortillas and I can make all kinds of mexican. My meat-eating husband will eat anything with the taco filling, so it must be a lot like the real thing.

The store I shop at also carries a pretty good selection of veggie burgers. The brand I get is called Harvest Burger, but you do have to read the label because a few of the varieties contain non-vegan products.

Also, I buy Smart Dogs, which are vegan weiners. I've had good luck finding store-brand hotdot and hamburger buns that contain no animal products. The brand that makes smart dogs also makes meatless sandwich 'meat', bacon, and ground 'beef'. I haven't tried those so don't hate me if they're un-yummy!

As far as chocolate, I suffer too. I've been able to find vegan chocolate bars at the local health food store, but that's about it. They're called rainforest bars or something, a bright-colored wrapper with jungle-related names for each flavor. They're expensive so I usually find that I'm better off to satisfy my chocolate craving with some chocolate syrup in/on something. Most brands are vegan, as far as I can tell from the label.

I hope you're able to find this stuff where you live. And I'm glad you're feeling better!!

Hi Cynthia

I'm glad to hear your new diet has helped so much with your bowel problems.

I'm afraid I know nothing about adult beverages, sorry! but if you are in

Britain there is a range of Plamil chocolate bars, which are okay-ish, but

not like the pre-vegan days milk chocolate. I get my treats from Dr Hadwen

Trust - 01462-436819. It helps to fund non-animal research into serious

diseases. There is quite a variety of treats (all vegan), but the ones I

get most often are fudge for Peter, the Turkish Delight for Colin, and the

violet flavoured chocolates for me. There are also chocolate peppermint

creams, chocolate orange creams, jelly bears (which I get for my daughter

when she visits), coffee creams, and others which I cannot remember at

present.

I believe you can also get vegan sweets/chocolate online from places like

Green Elephant, The International Vegetarian Union and The Vegan Society.

Good munching.

Thank you! These are British products, are they not? I wonder if they ship

to the colonies? <g>

FWIW-learned the hard way to put the Marmite on the toast SPARINGLY. One of

my eyeballs fell out when I bit down on it.

LOL! I LOVE that stuff and it is impossible to find in the last two places

I lived and it's been a few years since I last had some. I'm moving to NYC

hopefully very soon and that is the thing I look forward to most: buying my

very own jar of Marmite. Yes, it is powerful stuff, that Marmite.

this is the link you get most often

tho, i don't like it cuz, its

a. horribly out of date

b. missing a whole lot

c. its innaccurate in that it lists a ton of european beers as US beers

http://www.sbvdesigns.com/veg/veganbeer.html

peta also has a site you might like to look up

the best thing to do is ask..most brewers would be happy to tell you

as for other drinks..most spirits are absolutely fine.....vodka, whiskey, et al

some wines use gelatins, but, thats more of a problem in england(just like with beer) as in the states most use bentonite( a clay)

again, for beer, there are 2 ingredients to watch out fer

1 is isinglas, fish bladder..again, mostly an english problem..watch out for any beer that is "cask conditioned"..

the other is lactose, milk sugar, which is very very rarely found in certain stouts, again, an english thing

cheers

Boca makes a bunch of vegan items...you just have to make sure it sez "vegan" on the front....since they make things with honey and eggs as well

there are a billion processed vegan options out there..i have no idea where you live, so don't know wot to recommend

and, you know wot, i bet you could cook if ya started slow..!!

:)

can you boil water(w/o reading the instructions each time of course!!) ??

then you can cook

get someone to give ya a few pointers...steaming veggies is a snap, pasta is simple, and there are a billion simple meals to prepare..get yerself an easy vegan cook book and try something

its hella healthier fer you, its not all processed crap(even vegan foods that are processed often have numerous nasty ingredients like artifiicial flavors and colors)

and you won't have tons of packaging.....

cheers
