Guest guest
Christine, I have been sprouting for a LONG time...I still use the jar with cheesecloth on top fairly often...it is functional and does the job...jars are often around. My FAVORITE way to sprout is in baskets...I learned this from " Sproutman, " soak your seeds...put them in closely woven baskets...rinse by running water over them a few times a day...they drain beautifully and lay a damp paper towel over the top to keep from drying out. (If you use a good quality paper towel you can use it for LOTS of baskets of sprouting....like up to 30 or so.) I have the flax bag that is Sproutman's newest favorite way to sprout...it is ok but not my favorite...I have seen some " wannbes " on the market but they do not look as sturdy as the original. (Just my two cents worth) I got my bag at Passages in Fayetteville btw. As far as sprouts go by all time favorites are lentils...I have made meals of lentils sprouts with a bit of kelp, olive oil and lemon juice...but they are great alone too. I am also very fond of peas, blackeyed peas, clover, alfalfa and radish(in small doses.) When you sprout black eye peas they taste like the fresh ones did that you'd nibble every so often as you shelled peas in the summer time. A plate of home grown tomatoes and sprouted black eye peas are mighty tasty. I tend to buy and sprout seeds you can get in bulk and cheap. I do like many grain sprouts but tend to use them in making dehydrated crackers and etc. I do eat sprouted wheat alone sometimes...it has a nice sweet taste... I also like wheat grass(in salads), buckwheat greens and sunflower lettuce...these go beyond mere sprouting though. I used to have 5 or 6 gallon jars sprouting all of the time with 2 or three trays of the greens going....I wish I still had that great dining room with its wonderful window...it would make the " sprout " factory a LOT easier! Now for my disclaimer...I know that some natural health writers 'dis sprouts altogether but if we listened to everything that was ever said about every food we would all have to become breatharians and leave it at that. So, I am just saying what sprouts I like and have consumed over that past 30 plus years. Christine, I looked at the link for Viktoras' books...I had to laugh...my beat up copies of " Love Your Body " and " Survival in the 21st Century " are mere shadows of what they formerly looked like...the colors are faded and you can tell that my books have BEEN USED!!! I had forgotten how beautiful the colors once were. Cheers, Ardee-ann http://www.the-stew.com http://www.freecycle.org
Guest guest
> Are lentil sprouts much different from alfalfa?? - Yes. lentils are from lentil beans, little flat pea like beans. You can get them in green or orange. They taste very much like fresh peas. And they're very user friendly, sprouting quicky and easily. They're also about the cheapest food you can buy. I go along with Ardee-ann, lentils are my favourite sprouts. I like tossing a handful of lentil sprouts into miso soup just before eating it. Alfalfa seeds are very small and make a kind of thready food. If you are going to sprout tiny seeds try broccoli. Another easy bigger bean for sprouting is garbanzo. rusty. - " Linda Hatton " <lghatton <rawfood > Tuesday, March 23, 2004 7:08 AM Re: [Raw Food] sprouting and Vik's books... > Are lentil sprouts much different from alfalfa?? Rusty, I thought lentils were brown..lol That is the only colored lentils I have ever seen unless they are brown when processed??Also, what are beet roots? If someone tells me that they are the roots from the beets, I am going to kick myself Thanks Love, Tone.....who has the virus that never ends.. > Are lentil sprouts much different from alfalfa?? - Yes. lentils are from lentil beans, little flat pea like beans.
