Guest guest
We have just starting eating these wonderful treats, but during this past week we have opened two of them and found a lavender gray shade of meat instead of white. They smell OK, but we were concerned so just threw them out. Does anyone know if they were really bad or is this just a color variation? Guest guest
Hi Nina, we eat a lot of young coco's and once in awhile found what you said about the meat. We were at a pot luck one summer and the hostess use to live on a coco plantation. She was opening a young coco and the meat was thin and a lavender gray transparent jelly so the conversation started. She said that these are just very young coco's, nothing is wrong with them. So, unless there is a bad smell to any coco when you open it (and you'll know!) they are ok. I still know some people who throw these away but you don't need to. The soft jelly is very sweet. On the other hand if the meat is very thick and still a lavender gray shade I don't know. I have never had one that color where the meat was mature that didn't smell really bad. This is usually because there is a small crack in the coco somewhere and air got into it. Guest guest
From my searching online i found that if you pour out the coco water and it has a pink tint then the whole shebang is bad. So, that is the only way i know to tell. peace nikki
Guest guest
I'm not recomending it, but it's quite often that I get a " pink " young coconut. I have eaten a lot in that state, and they have not made me ill.
