When I quit smoking.....about 6 years ago, my nose started running

non-stop 3 days after my last cigarette. I knew it had something to

do with not smoking anymore, but didn't know what it meant. Then I

went to the doctor who told me it was allergies and put me on

antihistamines which didn't work very well and my mucous level didn't

change for a full year. Then I knew it wasn't allergies. That was

when I started using the internet to look for answers to my health

stuff and stumbled into this raw vegan diet thing. I learned to

manage the mucous by my water intake. When I get even slightly

dehydrated, it comes back.....I get congested and my nose runs

again. So, when I get that way, I know to drink a lot of water.

That clears it up. That is, by the way, just clear, clean, purified

water with nothing in it. I aim for at least 3 quarts a day, but

know that 4 or 5 quarts is too many for me because it seems to mess

with my chemistry in such a way that if I drink 5 quarts, I am still

thirsty all the time. Someone told me once that I was flushing out

all my electrolytes..... I wouldn't know, but cutting back to 3-3

1/2 quarts a day seems to work really well for me.

Mucous is simply a means the body uses of encapsulating toxins so

they don't contaminate the body, and then transporting them out in

the mucous. Just leave it alone, and trust that the body is doing

the right thing, and protecting us with mucous. It's a means

of " detox " . Deluging the body with water, or any other means

designed to " flush " out or stop mucous, is counter to the health of

the body, overworks the kidneys, possibly rids the body of

electrolytes, etc.

Gimmicks designed to produce a certain effect in the body are never

a good idea. It's best to just eat a diet of our natural foods,

which have a high water content, and they have just the right

proportion of liquid for our bodies. We are not habitual water

drinkers by design. I personally never drink water at all unless I'm

fasting, and then I only drink as much as my body wants; or if I'm

away from home and fruit is unavailable and it's a particularly hot

day, I may drink some water if I'm thirsty. The only thing I drink

on a regular basis is the juice of oranges which I squeeze, though

many rawfooders don't even drink anything at all.

This is absolutely correct.

So why do we treat mucous as toxin?

Because it's secretion is evidence that we have foreign matter in the body

that the body is trying to reject. So we want to get the mucous out, taking

the toxins with it, not just dry up the mucous source. To be mucous free is

to be clean, but Zsuzsa is spot on about not just medicating it away;

Clear the toxins and the mucous will take subside, but loosening up the

flow helps the entire process. Moderate extra water, warm teas [not hot],

lemon juice, ginger and cayenne are a few things that aid the cleansing

process and increase mucous flow thus clearing mucous conjestion.

We may aid the process but not inhibit it.
