We usually eat tuna mornay, sausages and onion gravy, pork chops, rissoles, roasts, chicken snitzels, potato pie, lamb shanks done in a stew, salmon mornay, salmon rissoles, crumbed chops, home made fish and chips, and rice puddings. All pretty old fashioned ! regards Shanoss
Guest guest
Hmm, well the sausages in gravy is easy - just use veggie sausages instead - I assume you can get those in other countries. We get supermarket brands, Quorn and Linda McCartney ones I think - but at the moment Sainsbury's over here does a 'cumberland and lincolnshire style' veggie sausages (kept in the cold meat/regular sausage section normaly) which are DIVINE! Totally scrummy. If anyone in the uk hasn't tried them look them up here: http://www.sainsburystoyou.com/main/frameset.jsp?bmUID=1016451983092 Or go to www.sainsburys.co.uk and do a search for 'vegetarian sausage' in the shop online bit. They are sainsburys own make I think. I find alot of the normal veggie sausages are a little too like hotdogs or a bit tasteless, not at all like these sainsburys ones. I normally do sausage cassaroles with veggie sausages - which is pretty similar to how you'd make onenormally (but a nice quick way to to yuse one of the coleman's powder mixes and just chuck some onions and mushrooms in with the veggie sausages. Quorn and Linda Mcartney do pre-made 'roasts' that you can cook just like a normal 'roast'. Also I recommend the 'mushroom and nut roasts' that you can often buy from supermarkets (again, Sainsbury's do a smashing one with a sauce attached). Chops etc you could exchange for the pre-made 'chickenless fillets' type things, which isn't 'quite' the same but you may be able to do something similar with it - and it may be worth popping into a health food shop to see if they do a 'slab' of plain soya stuff that you can marinade an add sauces to yourself. We usually have veggie sausages, veggie lasagnes or bean burgers with chips now, there isn't a fishy equivalent so i've seen so far... there's a marketing opportunity for people there.... fb , " Shannon Cross " <shanoss@o...> wrote: > > _______ > > Message: 11 > Fri, 15 Mar 2002 09:39:24 -0000 > " fudge_and_frisk " <kainalex@h...> > Re: recipes > > What sorts of foods do you usually eat? > > We usually eat tuna mornay, sausages and onion gravy, pork chops, rissoles, roasts, chicken snitzels, potato pie, lamb shanks done in a stew, salmon mornay, salmon rissoles, crumbed chops, home made fish and chips, and rice puddings. > All pretty old fashioned ! > > regards > Shanoss
Guest guest
I live in Canada and we do not get the Linda McCartney brand veggie stuff or Quorn. When I was in London I was impressed at all the vegetarian choices in the supermarket. Of course I live in a small meat and potatoes type of place so I probably have less choice than anyone living in an urban center. Guest guest
Hmm, well, you can get dried soya over here in health food shops - you should be able to get that in Canada still, and you can pat that together to make sausages etc - then you can add a few herbs to it or some onion etc and it might work to make a pattie or sausage type substance. Otherwise it's back to the old ways and making burgers and bakes etc from the original ingredients. I have a really nice aubergine bake receipe I do alot - but it's not exactly 'quick' as you have to salt the aubergines first and then bake for an 45min - hour. Not including chopping time (especially if you are slow like myself) - I usually leave a good 2 hours to do it - but it's good on a sunday. If people want the ingredients etc I will try to remember to bring the receipe in tomorrow. You can make alot with just your frozen carrots, peas and potato type mixes - and then just chuck some breadcrumbs round them - that's pretty much alot of the veggie burgers you can get over here. Have you had a look on the web for Canadian vegetarian resources? Some of these may have support links and receipes on etc. Sounds like Yves and 'second to nature' are a 'Quorn' equivalent in Canada... http://www.yvesveggie.com/ http://www.2ndnature.ca/ or try these organisations/groups etc http://www.veg.ca/ http://www.towardsfreedom.com/viva/ http://www.indianlife.com/ http://www.sunandsky.on.ca/ http://www.veggienews.ca/ http://www.earthsave.bc.ca/ If you haven't seen these - try going to www. and type in 'canada' and 'vegetarian' into the search. Lots of different things come up. fillerbunny , " Jacqueline " <jacq@c...> wrote: > I live in Canada and we do not get the Linda McCartney brand veggie stuff or Quorn. Guest guest
Yes, I have had both Yves and 2nd Nature products they are quite good although I don't like the Yves burgers much. That is just a personal taste thing though. Lots of people do like them. President's Choice which is a supermarket brand makes good burgers and veggie hotdogs too. I just meant that we don't get those two particular brands here where I live, and we don't have much of a choice of veggie foods. In Halifax there is more choice and in Toronto even more than that. I live in a very small city whose healthfood store just closed (and wasn't that great to start with). 2nd Nature makes an excellent Taco mix - btw, if anyone is interested. My daughter loves it.
