From Dr. Michael Greger's June 2004 newsletter:

According to Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., one out of every seven

Americans is on some form of low-carb diet. An independent research

group last month concluded that over half of Americans have tried a

diet like Atkins in the past, are currently on it, or would try it

in the future. That is a terrifying statistic, given the harm a

meat-centered diet can cause.

There have been a few organizations (like the Physicians Committee

for Responsible Medicine) and individuals (like Dr. John McDougall)

that have done some excellent work exposing the truth behind Atkins'

lies. But there was not enough being done.

The Atkins Diet is over 30 years old. I knew there were decades of

damning research out there. Why has it not been presented to the

American public? The new survey results revealing the incredible

popularity of these diets pushed me over the edge; I knew I had to

drop everything I was doing and lock myself in the medical library

for a month. Well, I'm out. (I hear we've been having some nice

weather lately :). I've dusted myself off and emerged with one of

the most comprehensive analyses of the Atkins Diet in history. In

fact it's so big I can't even send it to people in this email--the

almost 500 citations alone would clog up your email In Box.

I'm so proud of what I put together, I decided it needed it's own

website. I called upon the considerable skills of talented

computer programmer Justin Samuel and graphic designer James D.

Hamilton of offshootinc.com to design me a website worthy of my

opus. And they exceeded my every expectation. Check out

http://www.AtkinsFacts.org

Not only does it have my analysis of Atkins, and the analyses of Dr.

McDougall and Dr. Ornish and a dozen other authorities, it has

never-before-seen on the web resources like the American Medical

Association's original scathing critique of the Atkins Diet and some

of the best articles that have been written over the past 30 years.

It's kind of a one-stop-shop for all the best work ever done to

expose the truth behind Dr. Atkins' high-fat fraud.

So if your friends, or co-workers, or family members, or anyone you

care about is on this diet, please direct them to

http://www.AtkinsFacts.org for the low carb low down--the skinny on

Atkins. And have them contact me if they have any questions

Finally there's a resource we can all send people to! So please

help me get the word out about http://www.AtkinsFacts.org I'm very

proud of it. Please email everyone you think might be interested.

Please link to it on any websites you have access to. And if you

hyperlink " Atkins Diet " and direct it to my site, search engines

like Google will think more highly of it. So maybe something

like " Get the facts about the

Atkins Diet. "

With all your help we can get the awful truth out to the public.

(I'm even thinking of making up bumper stickers or even shirts

promoting the site to give away--let me know if you're interested).

In fact here's a sample email you can cut and paste from to get out

to any related email lists you're on, or internet bulletin boards,

or anywhere you think people could benefit from it:

Is the Atkins Diet Safe?

Why did the largest organization of food and nutrition

professionals in the world call the Atkins Diet " a nightmare of a

diet " ?

Why did the British government's Medical Research Council

come out and warn that the Atkins Diet poses a " massive health risk " ?

Why did the President of the American College of

Nutrition once say, " Of all the crazy diets that have been proposed

in the last 50 years, this [Atkins Diet] is the most dangerous to

the public if followed for any length of time " ?

Learn why the American Heart Association, the American

Medical Association, the American Dietetics Association, the

American Cancer society and every other major medical, nutrition or

science-based organization in the world is opposed to the Atkins

diet.
