Guest guest
Short intro--I am new (few weeks) to raw fooding. Just getting warmed up. Weekday breakfasts and lunches are now totally raw for me, but not dinners yet. I just bought a flat of 20 brown turkey figs from Costco. They seem perfectly ripe, are beautiful to look at and have a lovely creamy mouth-texture. But, to my suprise, they don't seem to have any discernable scent or flavor aside from an extremely mild banana-ish taste. (I eat them room temperature, as-is without adding anything else.) This is the first time I've ever eaten figs, so I wonder are my taste- buds dead? Are oderless-tasteless figs normal? If this is normal, then I wonder why fresh figs are considered so rare/wonderful and cost so much? Julia

As we all know, organic is always better. And also who knows who far those figs were shipped from where they were grown. Local is always better than shipped from far away. Secondly, different varieties of figs have different qualities. I personally prefer fresh black mission figs to Brown Turkey figs. I don't find many organic figs here in Sarasota so I wind up buying figs from Publix, where they are not organic and where they are shipped from god knows where. I find that much of the produce at Public comes from other countries. I don't like that one bit, as they might have been irradiated or fumigated before being allowed into the US, thus further compromising their nutrients. Guest guest
I agree with you all about buying organic foods. I do buy the majority of my produce from a local organic CSA farm. But I bought these figs on impulse because I'd never tried any before. I just checked the box they came in. All the box says is says " Product of USA " which isn't very descriptive IMO. Also, they went bad/moldy just one day after I bought them. :-( Certainly won't be buying that particular product again. Julia
