Guest guest
Hi, I live in Conroe, just north of Houston. How far from me are you? I'm new to vegan raw foods and probably can't be of much help to you but maybe we can be of support to each other. Feel free to contact me directly. Guest guest
In the body of your message you say that you are looking for someone near you who is a vegan. Can I assume (based on the concept of this group and the subject title) that you mean a raw vegan? I have been vegan for a little over a year and have been intrigued by and have been looking into raw foods. I had been toying with the idea for a while now and was just not ready to commit. I finally decided, after equiping myself with a slew of raw books and some new appliances (i always like to have the toys that go along with my projects)...good use of my bonus doncha think?.....that I would commit. I started by saying: I am committing to at least 60% raw and I will move upwards from there. I would say that now, after a couple weeks, I am about 85-95% raw (depending on the day). I am of course moving towards the 100%. In Houston, of course we have several Whole Foods (tho none that carry any raw crackers as some other posters in other areas have indicated...sadly). We also have an Organic Co-op, called Central City Co-op. I have been going for over a year. The website is http://www.centralcityco-op.org There is a map (it is in Hyde Park area) and other info. They are open on Wed and Sat and offer boxed shares and " extras " . They also have dry goods and some raw snacks....yummy! A couple times a year they have a big fundraising gala with a huge buffet of mostly raw food. Oh, you just wish that all of your family gatherings served food like this! There are also occasional raw food classes at the GoVegan Texas Cooking School. Pat Greer, co-founder of the co-op has already done two classes at the school (it just started in September) and has plans to do more. She is raw and sometimes speaks on the govegantexas show on KPFT 90.1 FM on Mondays at 11 I think. Visit govegantexas.org for updates. Also, there are whispers on the wind that they want to open a raw food restaurant here in Houston (thank God!)....hopefully within the next year. There is also a raw food support group that meets on the first saturday of the month (i think). The co-op website might have a link to it. Or, click on contact us and they should be able to direct you to the person that is in charge of these. I have not yet attended a meeting, but plan to soon. They have a potluck and meeting and usually a speaker or do some yoga. Also, re: growing food. The Last Organic Outpost, who supplies greens to the co-op lets you come pick some greens yourself, but they also have some gardening classes too (if i remember correctly) there website is: www.lastorganicoutpost.com there is also a link to it from the co-op website as well. They also have events every now and again. Other sources for good, organic food/sundries are: Saturday Market (8a-12p) at the Onion Street Cafe in the Heights, There is another market on Tuesdays from 5-7pm at Christ the King near Rice Village and the midtown farmers market at T'afia off West Alabama in Midtown on Saturdays from 8:30-12:30??? Hope this helps...didn't mean to write a book Kristi rawfood , " bb546124 " <bb546124> wrote: > > > i am looking for anyone near me who is a vegan. so that i can learn to be a vegan who can grow my own food.
