Guest guest
Hi everyone. I am new to the site. 29/female, just trying to get into the best health I can. I became vegan about 5 years ago, and through the last 2 years lost 50 pounds. This year I had a lot happen to me, all the things in my past came to haunt me as well as current events. I was medicated, and gained a lot of weight. Not to mention my eating has become terrible. I want so badly to become vegetarian again, eating raw foods for optimal health. As well as get rid of the weight gain and cleanse my body of all the medications I had to take. Soon my husband and I want to start a family, and I want to be in the best shape I can be in. I know I am highly addicted to sugar. Not just candy, but anything. I have been trying to cut it, but I find it so hard. I know I should of never started to eat it again.....but I guess no one is perfect. I have withdrawls, and it is so hard. Any advice on that? I look forward to meeting you guys, hearing your advice, as well as a push in the right direction to starting my raw life over!! Chrystal H. Guest guest
Hi Chrystal, I'm new to raw too... 41 years old, 2 kids (6 years and 1 year) and battling high blood pressure. I want to be healthy to be there for my kids too! I too am a massive sugar addict (Halloween was a killer, just read my post on " I made myself sick " ..... What works for me is stuffing myself with dates. There are only so many you can eat, and the sweetness rivals candy. The sugar urge starts to diminish after a few days as does the desire for as many dates. If you crave chocolate, you may want to try some raw cacao beans. The raw form of chocolate is a bit bitter and to me has a slight after taste of olives (of all things!), but mix it with some dates or honey and you have yourself a " chocolate fix " ... there are some raw chocolate candy recipes around too. Good luck! Let us know if the date trick works for you. Annette > > I know I am highly addicted to sugar. Not just candy, but anything. > I have been trying to cut it, but I find it so hard. Guest guest
Welcome, Chrystal, You are taking the first step..One day at a time..Don't be too hard on yourself..Sometimes, it's just one moment at a time..You can do it, just put your mind to it..You have to want to do it more than you want to eat sugar..Just remember this too shall pass and you don't ever have to go through the pain again if you don't want to..Next time you reach for some sugar, just think it through and realize how bad you will feel after you do it..Keep on keepin on.. Guest guest
Hi Chrystal, If you're truely serious about your health and the family you and your husband want so much to start then blink a few times and get ready to do a lot of reading. There is a new twist to the addage " Knowledge Is Power " rather " Power is What You do with Knowledge " . Go to this website: www.nancyappleton.com , print out the 124 items in reference to the effects sugar has on the body, then pick up the following books in any order that suits you and read them from cover to cover. 12 Steps to Raw Foods - Victoria Boutenko The Raw Family - The Boutenko's Natures' First Law - Arlin, Wolfe and Dini The Raw Secrets - Frederic Patenaude Raw Power - Stephen Arlin When you get a chance email me off line. Hope this helps. Good Health to You Elaine
Guest guest
I'm just shooting out the door but I did want to take a moment to respond to your post. Medication and then rapid weight gain is a very common occurrence. On top of those crappy medicated blues we all backtrack a step or two on the way to being a permanent raw lifer so I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Kicking the sugar habit is one of the toughest things I had to overcome so I know where you're coming from. I do know that it's harder in the beginning but if you can stick to living without it in your system for a week or two you immediately start feeling better. After a while of being off of it, it's horrible when you taste it again. I can't emphasize enough how much it helps to be able to get online here at the raw food forum and talk to people when you're feeling weak or tempted by the cooked-food devil. :>) Having an addition support group is extremely important in the beginning and you may have to try a local group where you physically get up and go to a meeting. See if you can find some local raw food groups to hang out with until you feel invincible and your super powers are restored. :>). Guest guest
i hear you on the sweets thing. that seems to be one of the biggest craving struggles. i used to have the biggest sweet tooth. i wanted cookies for breakfast! truly! and often i would have them. i always had cake, cookies, ice cream, junk in the house. the gloppier, the creamier, more decadent-the better (i thought). then, last year, at 30 (along with horrible yeast infections, bad acne and irritable bowel syndrome) I started getting horrible migraines on my cycle! Well, that was the last straw! Let me tell you what worked for me: I didn't start out to get rid of my sweet tooth, just the medical problems. But, I was fed up with them, and desperate (and desperation does help). I did a veggie juice fast for a week. The first couple days were very hard, but i was ok after that. i really felt some detox symptoms too, which i relished b/c i knew that meant good things. after that fast, i really did not want anything very sweet or salty at all, it cleaned my palate. And, that desire being removed, helped me continue to not eat highly sweet or salty foods, which continued to help me not eat those foods. That led shortly to vegetarianism and quickly to veganism (which were frankly the last things i had planned when i first started juicing) and now raw. So, I encourage everyone to start out juicing. it cleans the body and the palate and the mind. it will start you out on good footing. it REALLY helps break the cravings. I have gotten my husband, my sister and my mom all started on it too (and they are all vegetarian/vegan now). They all say that the juice fast helps kill the cravings. In fact, my sister, whenever she feels herself becoming out of balance as far as her cravings go (esp for bread, which is really just a sugar craving in disguise), she does a juice fast. Another suggestion, which i have not done completely, but am starting on this week in fact is something i read in one of the boutenkos' books (can't remember which one, maybe 12 steps). She said that to get rid of her sweet tooth, she drank a quart of sesame milk a day for two weeks (not only that, but she just made sure to include that) and that cured her. Now, may I suggest that you might find sesame milk bitter and gross. And, I might tend to agree with you. However, if you add a little honey and a good amount of carob it really takes the edge off. At first it might still be wierd, but the more you drink it, the more it grows on you. And, after a couple days you can start reducing the amount of honey. Sorry to be so long-winded...but those are my thoughts. Kristi (In rawfood , " just2halls " <just2halls@s...> wrote: > > > Hi everyone.
