as anyone here ever had a b12 issue? I've read the one symptom is pain in

the hands and feet.

Once in the past I went vegan, several months later I would get this type of

pain. It would last several days. Once I read about b12 I took a b12 pill

one morining that I had pain. It went away in 10-12 hours as opposed to 2

days like normal. I thought this may have been b12 realated.

Now as a raw foodist (1 month or so) again I am starting to have these pains

in my hands and feet. The odd thing is that I got a pain in my hand today, but

have taken b12 pills twice in the last week.

I'm really confused. Maybe the pills are old or inactive or maybe it is not

even realted to b12.

I'm thinking of taking a suppliment called superfood that is based on

brewers yeast.

Is brewers yeast a fore sure source of b12?

Sometimes that kind of pain for me has been more related to lack of hydration; I

needed to drink more water, and that seemed to take care of the problem. B12

deficiency is a really rare problem, and actually shows up more in the

meat-eating population than it does in the vegan. So your pain may actually have

another source. My understanding is the only way to know for sure is there is a

serious B12 deficiency is to do a blood test.

Peace,

Vlaerie

Hi John,

I'm a pre-med student and the symptom you're referring to is called

peripheral neuropathy. It can happen with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia as

well as with pernicious anemia. There is an excellent article on it here:

http://www.biotechwatch.com/knowledge_base/MayoClinic/PeripheralNeuropathy.h

tml

As a fifth year vegan, I take a B12 supplement as a preventive measure. If

you experience any of these symptoms, I recommend taking a vegan B12

supplement. Better safe than sorry, I think. Especially when it comes to

possibly irreversible nerve damage.

I've read some research that seems to indicate that if we had been lifelong

raw vegans (like many of our primate cousins), our intestinal flora would

produce all the B12 we need, but because of eating animal products and/or

cooked foods, we kill off some of those friendly bacteria and we can never

quite recover them again to the point where they're providing all the B12 we

need. I have not yet been able to completely verify what was said about

cobalt in the article on living-foods.com that was mentioned. Of course,

that doesn't mean it's not true. I think it is really important for us (raw

foodists and vegans) to get to the bottom of the B12 issue. There is a lot

of misinformation and pseudoscience within our community (as well as in the

traditional medical community) and it would be great if we could really

discover the truth.

This is interesting.I've always wondered why we must be concerned about B12

when some societies have been vegan for generations with no supplements at

all-that might explain it.
